German remains from the First World War in the Bois Haut de Chaumont

A circular route to visit the German remains from the 1914-1918 war in the Bois Haut de Chaumont in Moncel-sur-Seille. In the woods, it's a walk off the beaten track in search of remains. This hike is best done with a GPS or a good sense of direction. It is possible that there are still remains to be found: if you find any others, please post the photos and send me the GPS coordinates to complete this hike.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at the junction of the D674 or Route d'Haguenau and Rue de Charagne in Moncel-sur-Seille. Parking is available along Rue de Charagne.

(S/E) Head towards the D674 and at the junction turn left for 20 metres to see the Vauthier marker and its information panel. At the marker, turn around and continue along the D674 uphill. Pass in front of the Chapel of Saint-Nicolas and Saint-Pierre, continue uphill and turn right at the first track. At the entrance to the woods, take the forest track on the left. At the end of the track, continue straight ahead into the forest.

(1) When you reach a trench area, continue straight ahead parallel to the D674.

(2) Walk along a straight trench forming a firing parapet. Continue straight ahead and at the end of the trench, turn right and climb into the forest for 50 metres, then turn right at a 90° angle.

(3) Continue parallel to the edge of the woods until you come to a ruined blockhouse and continue straight ahead.

(4) Reach a concrete ammunition box. Turn left at a 90° angle, following a trench.

(5) You will reach a concrete shelter with two entrances. After the shelter, continue to the right on the descending line to reach a wide field path. Turn right and, following the same route as on the way there, return to the car park (S/E).
