Via the Saint-Gengoult Fountain and the Brin Pond

A lovely walk, partly in the shade and partly in the sun, which will take you to the edge of the Étang de Brin in its forest setting. A birdwatching hide will allow you to discover the wildlife that lives around the lake. A pair of binoculars may prove very useful.

Description of the walk

Place Saint-Martin car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head along Rue de la Basse Brin, then turn right onto Rue de la Haute Brin,

(1) Just before the cemetery, take the path on the right which goes round a pond. At the road, continue left along the street that runs alongside the housing estate and, at the top of the hill, carry on straight ahead along the small path.

(2) At the road (Rue Saint Jean-Fontaine), turn left and head towards the forest. At the forest, follow the path which curves slightly to the left then to the right until you reach a wide forest track.

(3) Cross this track and take a small grassy path almost directly opposite.

(4) When you reach a T-junction, turn right, then left 150m further on. Follow this path to the edge of the forest. Go round the water tower on the left, go down the path and turn left onto a wide track (do not join the road ahead).

(5) At the entrance to Bey-sur-Seille, turn left onto Rue de Nancy, then immediately right onto Chemin de la Passe, then right onto Rue de l’Église. Cross through Bey-sur-Seille and take Rue Principale on the left. Continue to the bridge and cross it.

(6) Take the path on the right to reach the copse.

(7) Take a detour to see the Fontaine Saint-Gengoult, return to the path, continue left to find a wide track leading up towards Lanfroicourt.

(8) Opposite the church, take the road to the left, then turn right onto Rue des Tilleuls, continue along Rue des Géraniums, pass the car park and continue left onto Chemin de Godelinchamps (a signpost is a little further on), ignoring the paths on the right.

(9) When you reach a Y-junction, continue left, crossing the stream. Climb up to the edge of a park, turn left, then descend steeply to the right.

(10) At the bottom of the hill, do not cross the stream; turn immediately right, stay on this path and ignore the path branching off to the right.

(11) At the edge of the woods, turn left, cross the stream, turn immediately right, then quickly left. Follow this path until you reach the Route Forestière de la Maquignère.

(12) Take it to the right until you reach the Rond Georges crossroads. Turn left and follow the Route de la Cuvelle until you reach a crossroads.

(13) Turn right towards the Étang de Brin. A small path on the right, just before the hunters’ lodge (private), leads you to the bird observatory.

(14) Retrace your steps. At the end of the path, turn right towards the dam on Étang de Brin.

(15) Return to the junction with Route de la Cuvelle.

(13) Continue straight on (GR®5) until you reach Brin-sur-Seille via Rue de l'Étang and return to the car park at Place Saint-Martin (S/E).

From the observatory, avoid venturing further into the forest, as the ground is very often flooded.

The Saint-Gengoult Fountain in Lanfroicourt, often dry and unregulated.
The totem pole between the fountain and the village

A lovely walk through well-maintained fields and woods filled with birdsong (I heard a garden warbler there). I would have liked to see the pond, but it’s been drained (a shame)..

I was lucky enough to do this route in dry weather. A really nice (mountain bike) route and a pleasant ride.
A slight issue after point 2, at the entrance to the forest where the path has gone a bit, and at point 3 where you really have to guess where the small path starts. Luckily, the instructions are very clear. It really is a lovely route, before moving on to the ‘Forest and Pond at Brin’ route, which, although pleasant, has too many long stretches of wide forest tracks. A lovely day’s mountain biking in any case.

A lovely walk that took me four hours at a leisurely pace. It’s a shame we can’t mention the signposts, as I find them really useful, just as much as the smartphone app for finding your way if you’re unsure. Just a quick note about waypoint 8: the sign for the Chemin de Godelinchamp is a little way past the spot where you need to turn left. The sign says ‘Place des Hortensias’ and there’s a marker which I won’t mention.

A lovely walk along a path beside the Seille, which was in flood at the time, allowing us to see just how wide this little river can get; then a trek through the mud, as it had been raining non-stop for two months; after meeting some very friendly and understanding hunters, we ventured into the Bois de Brin and made our way back to where we started, in the snow.
