Description of the walk

Start from the village of Le Lauzet.

(S) In the church square, follow theGR®50sign pointing towards the Col du Lautaret.
Thefirst part of the hike is almost flat and follows the Guisane along a very pleasant path (the elevation gain for the first 4 km is around 180m, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery). Reach the Font Cibert Chapel.

(1) Stay on the wide track to reach the Chapelle de la Madeleine.

(2) Continue along the path that runs alongside the river. You’ll reach a Y-junction.

(3) Leave the path leading to the Col du Galibier on your right and continue on theGR®50to the left. Begin a short, steep climb which ends at the Col du Lautaret (E).

Worth a visit

As the final leg of the Combeynot loop is short, you can extend it by doing the Lac de Combeynot hike (a hike to a high-altitude lake nestled in a glacial cirque at the foot of the Pics de Combeynot: 4½ hours with an elevation gain of 934m starting from the Boussardes car park at Lauzet) described on the Visorando website.

We set off from Le Casset and walked to the Madeleine Chapel. We chose this route instead of the Vallois Tunnel due to fresh snow and mist. An easy, safe route.

Were there still flowers at the start of the wooden footbridge (over the Guisane)? A member of my family died after falling from the footbridge.

We completed the Combeynots route in three days (instead of four), setting off from Le Lauzet to combine the two shortest stages. It was a decision we didn’t regret.
So we set off from Le Lauzet to Lautaret, then from Lautaret to the Alpe de Villar refuge where we camped, surrounded by marmots.
The Lauzet-Lautaret section was the one we found least interesting on the route. It’s a wide path shared with lots of cyclists (mountain bikers). So we don’t regret starting with this section, which got us into the swing of things gradually, as the rest of the hike was magnificent.

The wooden footbridge over the Guisane, just before the climb up to the pass, is very dangerous for cyclists.
