The Guisane spring at the start of the Lauzet

The Guisane, which waters the entire valley from the Col du Lautaret, crosses the villages of Serre Chevalier, Le Monêtier-les-Bains, La Salle-les-Alpes and Chantemerle before joining the Durance in Briançon. This easy climb follows the old Lautaret road to the pass, before turning left to reach the source of the Guisane.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the entrance to the village of Lauzet.

(S/E) Stay on the gently sloping road to cross the village and quickly reach the dirt track, which is the old Lautaret road.

(1) Turn right, follow the red and white markings of the GR®50 and, after a very easy climb, you will reach the Chapelle de Font Cibert.

(2) Continue along the track and follow a small pond before arriving at a place called La Madeleine, where there is a chapel.

(3) Keep following the clearly visible track, which gradually becomes steeper. You will come out at the junction with the old Galibier road, marked by a sign.

(4) Keep left, cross the Ruisseau de Roche Noire on the footbridge, then start a more sustained climb. After a hairpin bend, find a barely visible path.

(5) Take it on the left and continue further on, at the foot of a solitary rock. Walk along the hillside, slightly uphill, to reach a ridge above a large car park. Descend to this car park.

(6) Turn left, follow the wide track and reach the Couchettes chalet. Continue along the right bank of the narrow stream of the Guisane, then reach the Source de la Guisane at the foot of a rocky outcrop.

(7) Return to the car park in the opposite direction.

(6) Continue along the track on the left, then turn right to go around the buildings at the Col du Lautaret and rejoin the track leading to the pass to return to the crossroads where you took the path on the way up.

(5) Retrace your steps along the long route you took on the way there to return to the car park at the entrance to the village of Lauzet (S/E).
