From Lachtelweiher, a circular route that passes via the summits of the Baerenkopf and the Sudel

From Lachtelweiher (in the municipality of Kirchberg), a pleasant circular route follows the Doller valley, passing over the peaks of Baerenkopf and Sudel in the Southern Vosges and through the farmhouse inns at Lochberg and Bruckenwald. This circular route also has historical interest as it follows, for a long stretch along the ridge, theGR®5, which runs along the former border between France and Germany from 1871 until the First World War.

Notes

In the immediate vicinity of the route are the Lochberg and Bruckenwald farm inns, as well as two shelters at Neuberg and Oberen Grambaechle.

There is a chalet belonging to the Club Alpin de France below the summit of the Baerenkopf.

In the section between the Lochberg Pass shrine and the Sudel, theGR®5route follows the former border between France and Germany from 1871 until theFirst World War and is marked by old stone walls and, at regular intervals, by numbered boundary markers stamped with an ‘F’ on the French side and a ‘D’ on the German side. An information panel explains the details at the summit of the Sudel and on the Sudel observation towers.

Please note that this route takes a detour from Baerenkopf.
This diversion is very well organised.

A pleasant walk, particularly recommended in hot weather as it’s mostly through woodland. The route is well signposted, but you need to pay attention as there are occasional turns to the right or left when you might be tempted to carry straight on. And you absolutely must make your way to the GRAMBAECHLE mountain hut (there’s a water tap there), which is lovely and offers magnificent views; here too, you need to be careful to take the path that leads there.
Just a quick note: the BRUCKENWALD farmhouse inn is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

A lovely walk, but with few views as the paths run through the forest.
No issues with signposting, no technical difficulties; the only challenge might be the steep slope at the start of the walk for those who aren’t very fit.
A bonus: the Baerenkopf farmhouse inn, where you can stop for a break 2 km before reaching the car park.
