A climb to the Baerenkopf from the Entzenbach Farm Inn

Starting from the secluded Entzenbach Farm Inn (612 m), this circular route takes you to another, very discreet farm inn in the Doller Valley, the Bruckenwald (750 m). Then, after a long climb to the Baerenkopf (1,074 m), at the summit of which stands one of the oldest mountain huts in the Vosges, the trail leads you to a third farmhouse inn, the Lochberg (910 m), before returning to your starting point.

Description of the walk

Access to the hike via Masevaux-Niederbruck: in Niederbruck, turn right at the church onto the small street, then take the path signposted Entzenbach which climbs up the valley of the stream of the same name.

(S/E) From the car park at the starting point, head towards the Ferme-auberge de l'Entzenbach by continuing straight along the track

(1) From Entzenbach (with your back to the farmhouse inn), take the unmarked path (formerly the Yellow Ring) on the right, which passes between the buildings and quickly turns left into the clearing before climbing steeply through the forest. Follow it to the top, where it meets a track.

(2) Then follow the Yellow Ring path to the right, towards the Bruckenwald farmhouse inn.

(3) At Bruckenwald, take the Blue Rectangle path to the right, towards Lochberg, and follow it to the junction with the Red Rectangle path marked with a white cross.

(4) Turn left and climb towards the summit of Baerenkopf via the Red Rectangle with a white bar trail. Reach a junction, then climb to the left and turn right towards the summit.

(5) At Baerenkopf, walk past the French Alpine Club of Belfort refuge and continue to the right on the Red Rectangle trail, towards the Col du Lochberg, which marks the border between Alsace and Franche-Comté.

(6) At the Col du Lochberg, cross the pass to return to Alsace, and descend straight down through the scrubland to the rugged pass separating the Lochberg from the Fennematt.

(7) Make a short detour to the left to the source of the Doller (Blue Rectangle). Then leave the GR® and turn left towards the source.

(8) Return to the pass.

(7) Then, back at the pass, continue straight on towards the Lachtelweiher, passing the Lochberg Farm Inn.

(9) At the farmhouse inn, turn right and then, shortly after, turn left. At the end, follow the small road to the right, towards the pond.

(10) Once you reach Lachtelweiher Pond, continue along the road for a short while and, after passing a house, head slightly uphill into the heathland on the right, following the Blue Rectangle.

(4) At the first crossroads in the stubble field, turn left towards Villa Puce, a modest stone cottage.

(11) At Villa Puce, turn right onto the Blue Ring/Blue Disc path, heading towards Entzenbach.

(12) Then follow the Red Disc trail on the right, which descends into the forest and leads back to the Entzenbach Farm Inn (S/E).

For parking, pull over just before the farmhouse inn to avoid the final few hundred metres of steep, gravelly road. You’ll find two or three spots where the road is wide enough to park without obstructing traffic.
A lovely route offering beautiful views to the south, east and across the Alsace plain. Several farmhouse inns are well worth a short stop. The trail markings have changed: the red and white rectangle has been replaced by a Red Triangle, but this is clearly indicated on the website.
