Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park after the chapel, walk down the road from Etueffont for 150 m, passing in front of the chapel.
The route is marked with a blue ring.

(1) At the bend, leave the road and go up a forest road on the left, passing through the barrier. At the crossroads, turn left until you reach Trou du Loup.

(2) Just behind the Virgin Mary statue, turn left, then left again onto the path. After a few hairpin bends, the path passes Tête Haquin (834 m), descends slightly before climbing up the second path on the right. The path follows the inter-municipal boundary to the summit of Baerenkopf. Continue to the left, the path descends,

(3) It passes in front of the French Alpine Club refuge, crosses stubble fields before reaching the Col du Lochberg.

(4) Very pretty oratory. Take a short detour on the Alsatian side to admire the landscape. Return to the pass and take a good forest path on the left for about 1.5 km to the Col du Chat.

(5) At the pass, descend to the right, then to the left to the forest road. The trail follows it for 200 m, then turns left to overlook the forest road, rejoining it 300 m further on. It reaches the Col des Sept Chemins (a handy hiking shelter in case of rain).

(6) Take a good path on the left that joins a forest road, which you should follow to the right for 300 metres.

(7) From there, take the path on the right, known as "l'ancien chemin" (the old path), which leads to the first houses of Lamadeleine-Val-des-Anges. After crossing the small stream of La Madeleine, turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Lamadeleine-Val-des-Anges: the mines
Lamadeleine is a small village nestled in the mountains with around thirty inhabitants, known as the Modeleinas. It was not until 1937 that it became Lamadeleine-Val-des-Anges, named after the valley where the village is located and perhaps after a former Benedictine convent. The opening of silver-lead mines in the early 16th century promoted the development of the village until the Thirty Years' War.
In the mining district of Giromagny, silver-lead ore veins began to be mined at the end of the 16th century, with total production reaching around one and a half tonnes per year. In the 17th century, 34 mines and galleries were still in operation in the district. The forests in the area were then intensively exploited to produce timber and, above all, the charcoal needed to smelt the ore.

The Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene
A hermitage is known to have existed since the 16th century. At that time, a chapel was the place of worship for the miners of the valley. In the 17th century, the chapel became a place of pilgrimage before being abandoned in the following century. All that remains of the 16th century is the late Gothic vaulted entrance.

The Baerenkopf
It rises to an altitude of 1,074 metres. At its summit stands a small traditional wooden chalet, a refuge of the same name, managed by the French Alpine Club. At the summit and along the ridge line, you can enjoy a remarkable panorama.

We did this route as a family (with our 11- and 13-year-old daughters). There's some serious climbing! But it's still doable without much training, as long as you're in good shape. Almost all of it is in the woods, so it's ideal if it's hot!

Lovely walk. Be aware that there is a steep climb from the start to the summit, where there is a beautiful view.
Very beautiful undergrowth

A pleasant hike, with fairly intense climbs, making it very satisfying once completed.
The views are not always clear depending on the season, but this forest walk is still very pleasant.

Nice walk
We took the wrong path at the start, so we cut across and missed point 2, but we eventually found the right route.
Another couple also took a wrong turn a little further on.

A lovely walk in the forest, very pleasant. It should be mentioned that the climb at the start is quite long and may not be accessible to everyone. Just a small detail that doesn't appear in the description: you need to follow the markings and the blue circle on white signs from start to finish. A wonderful discovery, worth doing again.

A lovely shaded walk, with a stop on the Alsace side for a picnic. It was fairly easy for us, despite the climb.

Hello,

I did this tour this morning, starting at 5:30 a.m. Here are my comments:
-I am familiar with most of these routes, but I usually start either in Saint Nicolas, La Madeleine or Riervescemont, so I didn't know the route from La Madeleine to "La Vierge" after the Trou du Loup.
-The distance indicated at the start as 100 metres is actually at least 250 metres.
-The instruction "go up to the left on a forest road" should be followed by "go through the forest barrier" because at 5:30 a.m. I foolishly took the first path on the left (which seemed to be indicated) and then the climb was "steep" and I found myself at a crossroads that I know halfway up the Baerenkopf...
-With this mistake and certainly a slightly shorter distance but a steeper slope, I completed this tour in 2 hours 20 minutes without poles at the age of 72...
... Young people, you should go there because I didn't see you there!

Note: there were still bees busy collecting honeydew, and not just a few, given the background noise...

Have a good evening.
