Orcières-Merlette - Discover the lakes in the Estaris area

A beautiful loop that allows you to admire beautiful mountain lakes.
One criticism might be that it gets quite busy during the holidays and at weekends (mountain biking, skiing and maintenance vehicles).

Please note that there may be guard dogs present.

Description of the walk

The hike starts from the Merlette car park at an altitude of 1,793 metres (1,870 metres on the IGN map) near the technical maintenance facilities for the slopes.
(S/E) Follow the path that passes by the hamlet of Forest des Estaris and turn left after the fountain (drinking water).

(1) At the fountain, continue along the main path for about 200 metres and take the track on the right (you will pass mountain bikers and sometimes chairlift maintenance vehicles). This is a wide, stony track which you follow towards the Joubert chalet.

(2) Before the bridge over the stream, look for the small path on the right that leads to the Estaris rock, which you will take on the way back. 150 m after the bridge, turn left onto a small, steep, stony path to the Jujal lakes, which you will leave on your right (admire the beautiful green valley through which a pretty stream winds).

(3) 150 m after the lakes, turn left. Pass by the Roche Rousse chalet (where you can buy refreshments) at the foot of the ski lifts, which you will leave on your left, and head towards Lac des Sirènes.

(4) This very pretty lake is sometimes busy because, even in summer, you can use the chairlifts to get to the Roche Rousse chalet (which makes the climb easier!).

(5) 50 metres after the lake, take a small steep path on the left to Lac Long. The climb is steep, but miraculously, there are few people around the lake, which is superb and teeming with fish.

(6) Pass to the right of the lake, following the small path that leads to the edge of the deep lake. I went around them on the left, staying fairly high up and taking the grassy section to come back down 400 m further on to the main path.

(7) Take this path, turning left towards the Grand Lac des Estaris (it's quite a climb!). Leave the small chalet on your right to reach the pass, where you will have a beautiful view of the Grand Lac (it is often crowded, but it is still beautiful).

(8) You are now at an altitude of 2,580 metres. The walk can continue around the lake or towards the neighbouring passes, but I didn't go there... I preferred to have a bite to eat at the arrival point of the chairlift, which is closed in summer.

(9) To return, retrace your steps along the main path until you are about 150 metres from Lac des Sirènes.

(10) Just before Lac des Sirènes, take a path on the left that passes close to the Gouroud hut. After the hut, the path is poorly marked and quite difficult to follow, and may discourage those who are prone to vertigo.
Finish this section of the path overlooking Lake Jujal, which leads to the path you took on the way up. Descend via the familiar path to the small bridge (150 m after the Joubert chalet) and turn left onto the path you spotted on the way up to go towards the Estaris rock. Beautiful view of Orcières Merlette. Be careful, there is a bit of easy climbing over a few metres, to be done vertically on the rock. The path leads us to the hamlet of Forest des Estaris, where we descend to the car park. With a bit of luck, you will see mountain goats in the rocks on your right before the hamlet.

And that's it, the hike is over. I hope you enjoyed it. Return to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

You can stock up on water at Forest des Estaris, where there is a pretty fountain, and at the Roche Rousse chalet.
Don't forget to wear your hiking boots, as your feet can sometimes be put to the test.
Personally, I would recommend doing this walk outside of holiday periods to best appreciate the landscape in peace and quiet.

i went in the opposite direction to the guidebook. The climb up the slopes is easier and, above all, allowed me to reach Lake Estaris for lunch. The walk around the lake is very pleasant.

Hello.
I followed the route on the way up, but as I'm afraid of heights, I took the main path on the way down.
And I can confirm that before the long lake, the climb is very steep!
Watch out for the patous (guard dogs). I met a hiker on the way up who had been bitten, and I saw some barking menacingly.
Otherwise, there weren't many people around as it was September, except for firefighter divers in Lake Estaris (!?) and a few walkers.
The weather was very clear after the storm the day before, with superb scenery - Garabrut and Aiguille opposite, alpine valleys and lakes - I put on a light jumper at Lake Estaris to eat because it was windy and very cool (even though I'm not sensitive to the cold).
I did this hike alone, no problems, met a few people and exchanged a few words.
I recommend it.

The route is quite busy, but given the width of the paths, this isn't a problem.
The lakes are pretty, but you remain within the ski area, so you can always see a ski lift somewhere and you have to accept seeing people who have taken the chairlift while you have walked up ;-)
We really enjoyed the wolf information stand run by the ONF next to the highest lake, where we learnt lots of interesting facts.
We would do it again, but we've done nicer ones in the area.

A beautiful hike to discover six lakes! With the ski lifts still closed, there were few hikers on the trail.
We had a picnic at the Roch Rousse chalet, which was not yet open.
After the Gouroud hut (point 10), the path is not well marked, but we made our way down without any problems and easily found our way back at the bottom of the slope.

A superb hike with dazzling autumn colours.
Between points 2 and 3, we took a slight detour to the beautiful Lake Jujal: this adds very little to the route and allows you to discover a magnificent landscape

Great for starting your holiday if you feel like walking and haven't done much during the year 😜

A superb hike with all these lakes along the ski slopes!
Despite a few clouds, I also had some beautiful sunny spells.
And it's quite a climb, even though it doesn't look like it ;-)

Although the weather wasn't great in August, with cold, foggy and windy conditions, this hike offers some very interesting views despite the autumnal conditions. It's the resort's flagship hike, so it's quite busy, but on this particular day, the walkers didn't linger. We didn't take the ski lifts so we could enjoy the scenery. The description provided is easy to follow (in any case, it's impossible to get lost).
We'll do it again when the sun's out.

Hello, I am planning to go hiking in the next few days and I have some questions about the signposting and accessibility in snow. I am used to snowshoeing. I would like to know if the trail is accessible with snowshoes and if there are any difficulties with the signposting in snow. Thank you in advance, Romain.

Variation using chairlifts in summer
This hike allows you to discover a high-altitude pastoral landscape and provides a deep sense of freedom, pleasure and wonder.

Today, you will reach the summits gently, without exerting yourself. From the summit of Drouvet at 2,655 metres, you will wind your way between natural lakes, wide open spaces and high-altitude plateaus.
Perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of the lake's mermaid?

the upper part of the hiking trail was still covered in snow, but the tracks left by snowshoers made it easy to navigate without getting lost. The lakes were still covered with snow. A beautiful discovery of the upper part of ORCIERES MERLETTE. We repeated the hike on 04/03, taking the Télémix lift up and walking down to Orciéres Merlette. Many thanks for the GPX track
