La Baisse de Camp d'Argent – Sospel

The sixth stage ofthe GR®52, where the landscapes change dramatically. Due to its length and significant descent of nearly 2,000 metres, the stage is very difficult. The descent to Sospel, which makes up two-thirds of the route, puts a real strain on the knees and ankles. Please note, it gets very hot in summer on this section.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Circuit du Mercantour par le GR®52

Description of the walk

(S) From the L'Estive stopover lodge, turn right (south-west) onto the road leading downhill for about a hundred metres.

(1) Quickly join theGR® on the left, below the stopover lodge. Above, the main road and the Authion massif from the previous day’s route. This start of the trail passes through larch woods to reach Cabanes Vieilles, a military camp where the memorial to the capture of Authion stands, featuring the tank that ensured the mission’s success.

(2) From the Cabanes Vieilles camp, take the wide track on the right which descends to the Cabanes Vieilles cattle farm.

(3) At the bend, take the path on the right which descends to the bottom of the valley. Cross the stream and climb up the opposite slope.

(4) At the junction at the 1801m mark, follow theGR® to the right (do not take the wide track also on the right). Join this track, follow it to the left for about 250m, then leave it again and continue the ascent to the Baisse de Ventabren.

(5) Continue along theGR® to reach the Baisse de la Déa.

(6) Cross the track and begin the final ascent of this stage, the Mangiabo (1821m). Pass the summit and begin the descent along theGR® which will take you to Sospel. Take the hairpin bend to the right and reach a fork.

(7) Continue straight ahead and descend to the Baisse de Linière.

(8) Continue left on theGR® and reach a junction.

(9) Ignore the path that branches off to the right at the hairpin bend and continue straight down to the Baisse de Fighièra. During this descent, discover the military remains that once protected the old border with Italy.

(10) Continue straight on along theGR® to Sospel, a charming town with the Pont Vieux. This stage ends at the wonderful stopover lodge, L'Auberge du Pont Vieux (E).

Notes

Please note: this is a very difficult stage due to the significant descent. Having completed theGR®52during the first week of August, we really struggled with the heat on this stage.
Please note: there are no water points along the route. We set off and each drank 4 litres of water.

At the L'Auberge du Pont Vieux stopover lodge, a warm welcome quickly made us forget how tough the stage had been!

The estimated time was way overestimated, and luckily 😅 it took us 7 hours, including breaks.

This section of the GR 52 is challenging because of its length; there are no rivers, and with a 1,000-metre descent over the last 8 km, I couldn’t see the end of it. However, the gradient is gentle.
The scenery is magnificent. The Lodge/Auberge de l’Estive is very pleasant. (at Baisse de Camp d’Argent)
You really feel the extra 10°C when the Mediterranean landscape comes into view. There were shaded areas, which meant we didn’t have to walk in the blazing sun.

An interesting and varied walk. However, the signposting could be improved around the Baisse de la Linière

A beautiful route along the ridges.
Remember to book accommodation well in advance: Sospel lies at the junction of several GR trails. The Mas Fleuri campsite is very convenient and offers dormitory accommodation, but this adds 2.7 km to this stage and the next...
