From Chichilianne to Clelles-Mens station

Chichilianne is a treasure trove of hikes towards the Vercors plateau. Once finished, some people take the train which stops at Clelles. But few hikers know that you can set off from Chichilianne or La Richardière and reach Clelles station in under two hours, walking alongside an irrigation canal for nearly three kilometres. This return walk to Clelles can also be taken in the opposite direction when you start your journey.

Description of the walk

Park near the motorhome car park on Route du Mont Aiguille.

(S) Head north along Chemin des Longes, which runs between a grassy park with tables and play equipment and the horse farm known as Les Chevaux d’Edoras. The path turns west and crosses Route du Mont Aiguille.

(1) Turn right towards the north, almost facing Mont Aiguille, and walk along the road for just under 200 m.

(2) After the bridge over the stream, take the forest path on the right, which descends until it crosses the Ruisseau de Bourdy and joins the Route du Châtel. Continue straight on, heading north, until you reach another junction. Take the cul-de-sac opposite.

(3) About thirty metres further on, turn left onto the dirt track which immediately veers right and climbs up to the ridge. Turn right then keep left to join a path heading down towards the north-east, leaving the ridge on your right. Follow this path down until you reach the D7.

(4) Turn left and carefully follow the departmental road down towards Clelles for about 250 m, keeping to the left-hand side of the road. After a huge rock on your left, cross the road and find a path leading down to the left, which you should take. Once at the bottom, turn left to see the waterfall and the irrigation canal’s intake.

(5) Retrace your steps and follow the irrigation canal in the direction of the flow. The canal runs through the undergrowth and generally heads north-east. Return to the D7.

(6) Cross carefully and continue to follow the canal, which gradually turns south-east. You’ll reach a star-shaped junction of forest tracks where the canal goes underground and the woodland gives way to farmland.

(7) Turn left and follow the path downhill until it meets another cross-path.

(8) Turn left towards the west. After a few hundred metres, you will see the Clelles-Mens station buildings on your right, followed by the railway tracks. A gap in the vegetation near the station forecourt allows you to reach the platform. Take care when crossing the cable rollers, which are 20 cm above the ground and are still in use: please respect the equipment. Continue to the level crossing opposite the station and cross it to reach the car park (E).

No equipment required. The descent between (3) and (4) is not very steep.

Information board about the irrigation canal at point (7).

At the start, there is a fountain in the grassy park.

Worth a visit

Chichilianne is well worth a visit.

At the start, behind you, the Château de Passières is a well-known spot for hikers. On the eve of hikes across the plateau, participants spend a final evening here. Very kitsch lounge.

The canal is used to irrigate farmland in Clelles.
