The Vercors High Plateau: from Roman history to the Resistance

This hike, in the heart of the Vercors, will allow you to discover the splendour of the high plateaus and a part of its history. A world of your own, ideal for the start or end of the season when snow still lies on other mountain ranges. Moderate elevation gain but a distance not to be underestimated; allow 6½ hours at a brisk pace, or 7½ hours at a more leisurely pace.
As is the case everywhere on the Vercors high plateaus, this hike should only be undertaken in good weather.

Description of the walk

Park atthe first car park in the village of Chichilianne, at La Richardière, past the cross-country ski centre, situated at 1,058 metres.

(S/E) Head towards Mont Aiguille and the Col de l’Aupet. To do this, at the first junction of forest tracks and roads, take the track on the right and immediately turn left onto the path at the bend.
This path soon joins a track that leads you to the start of a second path (altitude 1,190).

(1) From there, leave the track and take the path on the right, which will take you to the Col de l’Aupet in 1 hour.

(2) Once at the pass, the ridge path is opposite the pass’s summit, although a cross-shaped signpost indicates otherwise. Follow this well-marked path, which descends slightly before leading to the ascent of the Pas de Selle, where you’ll probably spot a few ibex. In a large scree slope – where high-top boots are recommended – follow the cairns to the left leading to the pass.
Please note: late-season snowfields can make it difficult to find your way and hinder progress: be careful and don’t hesitate to spend a few minutes going round them if necessary.

(3) At the pass (Pas de la Selle), follow the path furthest to the right, which leads to a superb viewpoint over the Queyrie plain (and its remarkable tree) and the Diois massif (Trois Becs, etc.).
From the pass, which isn’t very prominent, pass beneath the summit of Montaveilla, skirting it to the left.

(4) No hollowed-out tree trunks serving as drinking troughs (keeping slightly to the right). From there, begin the descent down the Plaine de la Queyrie and keep an eye out for the numerous marmots.
Please note: from the pass onwards, the elevation gain is minimal, the walking is easy but the distances are considerable.

(5) 200m past the striking tree on the Plaine de la Queyrie and before beginning the descent into the valley floor, don’t miss the old Roman quarry on the right. A fragment of a column marks its location; look up to spot the quarry and get a better view of it.
Following this delightful and unexpected discovery, continue the descent to the crossroads just before the Pré Peyret hut at an altitude of 1612 metres.

(6) Take the path on the left, leaving the hut straight ahead of you. Follow the path as it climbs gently and ignore the track branching off to the left.
At around 1620m, take the signposted path on the right, even though the IGN map indicates the path on the left (a minor error on the map, but the two paths join a few hundred metres further on).
At the point marked 1611, you’ll reach the sign for Pison, indicated as being at 1613m.

(7) Continue straight on, towards Chatillon en Diois/Archiane. You’ll reach the Col du Pison.

(8) Shortly after this pass, a path branches off to the left, marked by a cairn at its top.
Take this path and, once you reach the cairn, quickly note the Bergerie du Jas Neuf, which is on the route. Take in the views of the Vercors highlands and follow this well-marked path.

(9) Once you reach the sheepfold, keep heading in the same direction and ignore the first path branching off to the left. You’ll soon come to a second path which leads to the Cabane de Chaumailloux in 25 minutes.

(10) Magnificent views of Mont Aiguille. This hut has been renovated very recently and can accommodate up to 19 people, featuring a lovely wood-burning stove. Take a moment here to soak up the history of this place. Then continue towards the cave near the memorial, which is situated about 300 metres further on to the left.

(11) A unique story from the Vercors, with both a happy and a tragic ending, unfolded here. Return to the path and continue to the left to pass the Pas de l’Aiguille, then descend in about an hour to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Chaumailloux Hut: sleeps 19, with a wood-burning stove; very recently renovated. There is little water along the route.

This hike, with an elevation gain of around 1,000 metres, is quite long in terms of kilometres.
Don’t set off too late, especially when the days are short.
Perfect visibility is essential to fully enjoy the scenery and avoid putting yourself in danger.

The route described here allows you to tackle the bulk of the ascent at the start and also ensures a splendid view of Mont Aiguille in the afternoon. Enjoy your hike, everyone, and please take care.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

Ancient Roman quarry on the Queyrie plain.
Resistance Memorial and cave where 23 resistance fighters took refuge during an enemy ambush.

We had a wonderful two-day hike. It was quite challenging, given the elevation gain at the start and the heavy backpacks we were carrying for the bivouac.
We had no trouble finding the path by combining the description and the GPX track.
There was a good flow of water for August at the hollowed-out tree trunk serving as drinking trough, where we were able to refill our water bottles.
Be careful at point 9 in the description not to approach the sheepfold during the season. We were greeted by two very unfriendly sheepdogs (even though we didn't see any sheep). On the Visorando map, next to the route, you can see two black dotted lines showing a safe way to get around it.
Thank you for sharing this information, it was a wonderful discovery.

A two-day hike on 15 and 16 July 2023 (starting at 10.00 and finishing at 17.00), taken at a leisurely pace, taking the time to look around whilst carrying 12-kilo rucksacks.
The initial climb is long but well shaded, so even in summer the difficulty is relative.
You can rely on the spring at the Col des Bachassons for your water supply.
The landscapes vary as you go along (plateaus, terraces, peaks).

The start/finish point (S/E) is poorly marked. The QR does not take us back to the starting point, but to a small car park in the centre of the village of Chichiliane. The start/finish point (S/E) is 4 km from the village of Chichilianne in a north-westerly direction. Look out for the sign for ‘Foyer de Fond’, then the ‘Aiguille’ car park.
Having searched thoroughly for the starting point, and with night falling quickly in October, we walked as far as the Col de l’Aupet and back.

A lovely walk. Please note that, before the Pas de la Selle, there is a cliff-top path which may be tricky for those prone to vertigo.
Furthermore, a large part of the walk takes place over sharp limestone pavement, which can be very slippery when wet. Walking on it is relatively tiring.
We took a shortcut via the Peyre Rouge hut.
Many thanks to the author of this lovely walk.
