From Champéry to the Susanfe hut

The usual route to the Susanfe hut from Campéry starts in the forest before emerging onto the Bonavau mountain pasture. Below the imposing peak of the same name, the trail climbs up a path with a few equipped sections and crosses the Pas d'Encel. The final ascent of the Susanfe valley takes place in a high mountain setting.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Haute Cime

Description of the walk

Departure from the Grand Paradis site, at the end of a road that leaves Champéry to the south. Large car park along the La Vièze river.

Directional signs at major intersections

(S) Leave the car park via the access road to the south and cross the river. Immediately afterwards, turn right towards Susanfe and Bonavau. Walk along the campsite and head south-west to a place called Les Clous.

(1) Then turn sharply left. After a few dozen metres, turn right onto a path that climbs into the forest. Cross the Barme road and continue along the winding path through the forest.

(2) Come out onto a path and follow it to the left. Climb steadily through the forest with several hairpin bends. Leave the forest and walk south through the mountain pasture to reach the Bonavau chalets.

(3) Continue south-southeast towards Susanfe.

(4) Near a chalet, ignore the Bonavau d'en Bas path on the left and head south towards Susanfe. Cross a few streams and arrive at a junction with the Dents du Midi trail.

(5) Climb right towards Susanfe and follow a few hairpin bends. Then cross (east-southeast) into the rock face. Above the Saufla gorges, a few exposed sections are equipped with chains, including the Pas d'Encel (elevation 1,814 metres).

(6) Cross the Saufla on a footbridge, then climb up the torrent to a small dam lake. Then climb south-east, follow several hairpin bends and cross a threshold that leads to the Susanfe valley.

(7) Head east-northeast up the valley to the Susanfe hut (E).

Hello,
I left on my own for a 4-day hike from Champéry/Champéry (1058m) in Switzerland to tour the Dents du Midi.
I spent 3 nights in a hut (the name given to refuges in Switzerland) with half board. I had 4 days of good weather.
Day 1 - Champéry to Susanfe hut via Roc Coupé, Belle étoile footbridge, Passage d'Encel:
5h30mn journey, 7.3km distance, 1120m positive ascent, 107m negative ascent, vertiginous passages,
overnight at Susanfe hut (2102m)
Day 2 - Cabane de Susanfe, Col de Susanfe (2494m), Haute Cime (3257m), Lac de Salanfe, Cabane de Salanfe (1948m):
8h journey, 12km distance, 1167m ascent, 1449m ascent. The climb to the Haute Cime (3257m) was a good one, but there was a strong wind blowing like an ox, and the descent was a bit tricky with stones rolling underfoot. Overnight at the Cabane de Sulanfe.
3 days- Cabane de Salanfe to Cabane de Chindonne (1604m) via Mex (1118m) (charming little village):
7h45mn journey, 18.20km distance, 967m positive ascent, 1330m negative ascent, some vertiginous passages, and very pleasant forest path, overnight at the Cabane de Chindonne.
Day 4 - Cabane de Chindonne to Champéry (1058m), via the Belle Etoile footbridge (1478m), Cabane de Bonavau (1550m) (charming mountain chalet):
9h10mn ride, 24.20km distance, 629m positive ascent, 1289m negative ascent, some vertiginous sections.
I arrived at the Grand Paradis car park, where my car was waiting.
Super escapade, in the cabins and on the paths the hikers are charming.
Sergio
