Auberge de Bonavau - Auberge de Salanfe

A big day with spectacular scenery. The Pas d'Encel pass is a little tricky to navigate to reach the foot of Mont Ruan. Reach Haute Cime, the highest point of the Dents du Midi at 3,257 metres, via the Col de Susanfe, then descend to the Auberge de Salanfe on the edge of the lake.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of the Dents Blanches massif, Ruan, Tenneverge

Description of the walk

(S) From the Auberge de Bonavau, take the relatively easy path towards Pas d'Encel and Cabane de Susanfe. Pass above a chalet and you will come to a crossroads with a large rock and a sign.

(1) Continue right on the path and, after a steady climb and a few tricky sections, you will reach
pas d'Encel.

(2) Pass under the small dam via the footbridge and, after a long climb, you will reach the Cabane de Susanfe.

(3) Continue along the path and, after a long climb, arrive at the Col de Susanfe.

(4) Turn left and begin a sustained climb in a rocky environment to reach the Col des Paresseux on the ridge. Enjoy the superb view here.

(5) Continue along the well-marked path through scree with rocky passages and reach the highest point of the Dents du Midi. Here, too, enjoy the sublime view of Lake Geneva and Lake Salanfe below.

(6) Retrace your steps to return to the Col de Susanfe crossroads.

(4) Turn left and continue downhill on a well-marked path. Cross a tricky section before reaching a plateau. Then follow a stream to reach Lac de Susanfe.

(7) Follow the track on the left and continue along the road until you reach the start of a path leading to the Refuge des Dents du Midi, where you will see a sign.
.
(8) Ignore this path on the left and continue along the lake to reach the Auberge de Salanfe, clearly visible above the dam, which is today's stop (E).

A very nice climb with a narrow passage through the Pas d'Encel. Lovely wide valley under the blue ice. Cabane de Susanfe is a very pleasant place to have a cup of coffee, very good cakes and really nice young staff. Back to the Col de Susanfe. At the top, I let myself be tempted by the Col des Paresseux. It's a really tough climb, so I did it without a rucksack, which means I can run faster :-). Unfortunately, 200m from the summit, a sea of grey clouds and a wind that could blow an ox over. Having left my team-mates at the pass, I decided to head back down. The view is undoubtedly splendid!
The descent to the refuge is fairly average.
A very large refuge but not very typical. View of the lake. Excellent meal (and all the extras!). Perfect showers. Dormitory a little too big though. Budget 180 € for two.
