From Céreste to Apt via the plain, Auribeau and Saignon

The final stage of this route is long and varied. The first section takes place on the plain at the foot of the Luberon ridges, which were traversed in the opposite direction during the second stage. We then gain altitude, climbing successively to the villages of Glorivette, Castellet-en-Lubéron and Auribeau, the latter two boasting a rich heritage. We then descend all the way, passing through the beautiful village of Saignon along the way.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of the Grand Luberon

Description of the walk

Start from Place de la République, in Céreste.

No signposting

(S) With your back to the hotel, turn left and head up Cours Aristide Briand. At a roundabout (column topped with a bust of Marianne), turn left and head uphill.

Red and white markings

(1) At the first junction, turn right onto Avenue des Plantiers. At the “Le Laquet” signpost (cross), go straight on and uphill. At the “Haut Laquet” signpost, continue straight on.

(2) Just after the Céreste exit sign, take the second path on the left, which is stony and downhill. After a short climb, head down a fairly steep slope and ignore a turn-off on the left.

(3) At a T-junction, turn right and then immediately left onto the main track. Descend and then continue along a slight incline. Ignore a turn-off on the right.

(4) At the next junction, at the “Les Capucins” signpost, turn right towards Les Guis. Cross a road (elevation 341) and follow the Chemins du Défend straight ahead. Ignore a turn-off on the right and cross a stream. Stay on the main marked track and ignore all turn-offs to the sides.

(5) At the junction with the tarmac road, turn right.

(6) At the signpost marked "Les Guis", turn right towards La Tuilière and cross a stream. At the hamlet of Les Guis, pass between two beautiful, large houses and continue along the tarmac road. Climb the hill, taking a few bends, pass a farm shed on the right and cross the hamlet of La Tuilière.

(7) At the signpost marked "La Tuilière", follow the signs to the left towards Saint-Castor. At the three-way junction shortly afterwards, turn right towards Glorivette and head uphill. At the next fork, keep right, continuing uphill. You will then arrive at Glorivette.

(8) Pass through the hamlet, keeping the houses on your right. Then head back down and pass between the vineyards.

(9) At the “Saint-Castor” signpost, take the second left towards Castellet, a stony, downhill path. Ignore a turn-off on the left. At the next junction (elevation 357; vineyards), go straight on. Ignore another turn-off on the left.

(10) At the “Raymondette” signpost, turn right towards Castellet. You will soon come out onto a road (D233); follow it to the left towards Castellet.

Yellow + Orange markings

(11) At the “Les Gaudins” signpost, continue straight on the road towards Castellet. Ignore a path branching off to the left and walk alongside a lavender field on your left. Ignore a first path branching off to the left and, immediately afterwards, at the start of a right-hand bend, turn left onto a flat, shaded path.

(12) At a three-way junction, turn right then immediately right again. Cross a stream at the ford and climb up a winding path. You’ll come out onto a small road; follow it to the left. In a left-hand bend, you’ll see a machine for processing lavender on the right.

(13) Then take the first right and head uphill. Cross the main road, continue straight ahead and pass an oratory. Cross the Place des Platanes, featuring two fine specimens of plane trees, and at the fork that appears immediately, turn right to reach the church of Castellet.

(14) Continue straight on along Rue de l'Ancienne Mairie. Pass a wash house and an old fountain. At the next junction (cross), turn sharply left onto Chemin de la Croix (temporarily leaving the signposted route). At the crossroads (post), turn right and head uphill (ramp). At the top, turn slightly right, rejoin the signposted route, follow the D48 and leave Castellet.

(15) Shortly after a road sign, leave the road and take a stony path that climbs to the left. At a three-way junction, turn right. You’ll come out onto another path; follow it to the left and pass a ruined chapel. At the next junction, turn left and leave a caravan park on your left. At a gate, take the second path on the right. Ignore a turn-off on the left and continue along a flat, shaded path with the road below on the right. Go downhill and rejoin the road.

(16) Follow the road to the left and uphill. Shortly afterwards, turn left onto a path that climbs. Ignore a path coming from the left and continue along a slight incline. Just before a T-junction at the edge of a field, turn left. You’ll come out onto a small road; follow it to the right. Climb slightly and pass some greenhouses on the right.

(17) At the signpost marked “Aire L. Peysson”, turn right towards Auribeau. Walk past a cemetery on your left.

No signposting (apart from an initial green marker)

At the junction, go straight on and ignore the turn-off to the right leading to the greenhouse farm. Continue straight on until you reach the foot of Auribeau church.

(18) Continue straight on along Rue du Four. Pass Place de la Fontaine on your left and continue down a narrow lane. At the T-junction (small sundial and Virgin Mary on the house opposite), turn left and go straight on until you reach the “Auribeau” signpost.

Yellow + Orange markings

(19) Follow the D48 straight on towards Saignon. After a DFCI sign, look for a path on the right running parallel to the road. Follow it until it joins the road.

(20) First turn right then left to cross the road and take a grassy path that starts running parallel to a DFCI track. Climb gently along this path, letting the track branch off to the left. Continue along a flat, shaded path. Walk alongside a lavender field on your left, pass the highest point of the hike and descend.

(21) At the “Les Plaines” signpost, continue along a stony path. Ignore a turn-off to the left and join the D48 at the “Chemin de la Française” signpost. Follow the road to the left towards Saignon.

(22) At the signpost “Les Fondons”, take a shaded path on the left towards Saignon. Head downhill and, at a fork, take the path on the right.

Red and yellow + orange markings

(23) At the “Le Colombier” signpost (cross), turn right towards Saignon and follow a flat, shaded path. You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the right for about twenty metres and turn left onto a path that runs parallel to the road. Join the road again further on and follow it to the left.

(24) At the Stop sign, follow the D48 leftwards again towards Saignon. At the foot of a “bends” sign, turn right onto a path descending parallel to the road. Join the road further on and follow it as it continues.

Red and yellow + orange + green markings

(25) Shortly afterwards, turn left onto a path. Further down, rejoin the road and follow it leftwards and downhill.

(26) Just before a low wall, take a concrete path on the right running parallel to the road. Descend a fair distance then turn right to go down onto tarmac. At the “La Poste” signpost (incorrectly positioned on the IGN map), continue straight ahead.

Red and white markings

(27) At the junction, go straight on and quickly note the church of Saignon on the right, up on the hill. Continue straight on and pass between a wash house and a fountain. Cross the Place de l’Horloge and continue straight down. Pass a wash house on the right and note the rocky cliffs towering above on the right.

(28) At the “Le Quay” signpost, head straight on towards Apt. At a right-hand bend, take the path on the left leading downhill. At a T-junction, continue downhill to the left. At the next T-junction, turn right and you will immediately reach the “Ginestière” signpost.

(29) Then turn left towards Apt. At a “private property” sign, turn right onto a shaded path. Walk downhill for a long stretch, keeping a wall on your right.

(30) When you reach a large gate on the right, head down a track. Cross a stream and continue along the tarmac.

(31) At the “L’Auriane” sign (give way), carefully cross the D48 and follow it to the right and downhill. Enter Apt and cross Avenue de Saignon on the left. Ignore a street on the right and continue downhill towards the town centre.

(32) At a small roundabout, turn left and walk alongside the cemetery on your left, preferably using the pavement on the right. Stay on this pavement and, before a large roundabout, go down the steps on the right which lead to Apt bus station (E).
