Location: on the D33, 16 km north of La Tour d’Aigues, Col de l’Aire des Masques.
Car park: Aire des Mascas or Vallon des Agasses rest area (300 m south of the pass, on the D33).
(S/E) Starting point: Aire des Mascas (single, unmarked path at the start). Alternative route via the wide track (150 m further down), marked by water tank 17.
The path, heading west-north-west at the start, runs parallel to a wide track before branching off from it after about 1 km (yellow markings).
Alternative route: on the wide track, ignore thefirst left-hand junction 1.4 km from the start, after admiring a magnificent Atlas pine, then turn right at a 90° angle onto a small path which rejoins the trail described above. At the junction, turn left (yellow, red and white markings)
Continue along the path through an oak forest until you reach a more open area.
(1) Turn left onto theGR®997 and walk alongside the track.
At a bend, cross the track and take the path opposite (yellow markings) to reach the hamlet of Boufaou.
(2) At the junction, keep left on the GR®.
Continue to the first T-junction (3.3 km from the start) at Plan des Agasses. Go straight on along the path heading north for about 50 metres.
(3) Take the first path on the right, which descends into the Roumis valley. Landmarks: the end of the yellow route and a sign with the number 2 on a tree to the left of the path. This valley descends directly to the ‘Panneau des Roumis’ junction.
(4) Turn right, towards Vitrolles, onto the Vallat de la Combe d’Apt (some sections are a bit tricky). You’ll come out onto a stony track 6.2 km from the starting point
(5) Turn left and continue for about 500 m until you reach the junction at elevation 539.
(6) Turn left and follow the track uphill to the road (D33). Cross the road and take the path opposite, which passes in front of a reservoir. Follow this path (yellow markings) to the ridge at elevation 681.
(7) Turn left onto the path leading back to the pass. At the sign for “Les mines 553”, head towards Aire des Mascas (3.4 km), which takes you back to the car park (S/E).
