From Hébuterne to Douchy-lès-Ayettes via Monchy-au-Bois and Essart-lès-Bucquoy

A very pleasant walk that takes you through varied and colourful landscapes across a changing countryside. Although there are no major difficulties, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended due to the length of the route.

Description of the walk

Park near Hébuterne Town Hall.

(S/E) Walk up the Grande Rue then the Rue de Foncquevillers to the edge of the village and turn right onto the Chemin de Gommecourt.

(1) Follow this road and join the D6 at the entrance to Gommecourt. Turn left (Rue Saint-Martin).

(2) Turn left towards Foncquevillers. Pass the town hall and the church.

(3) Pass the military cemetery.

(4) At the entrance to Foncquevillers, turn right onto a road and join a wide cross-road.

(5) Turn left and continue straight on after a small junction leading to the cemetery on the left. You will come to the start of a small path on the right.

(6) Follow it until you pass under thesecond power line.

(7) Take the small path on the left and follow it to the Route de Essart-lès-Bucquoy (D8).

(8) Cross it carefully and continue straight on along a path until you reach a small road.

(9) Follow it to the right, stay on the road as it bends to the left and pass alongside a wood.

(10) At the edge of the woodland, turn right and, at the next junction, turn right for just over 100 m.

(11) Turn left, heading up towards the Bois d'Adinfer.

(12) Continue to the right and follow the edge of the woodland. Turn right onto the first path and you will reach a stream, the Cojeul.

(13) Continue straight ahead, reach Rue du Val and follow it until the next street on the right.

(14) Take Rue des Processions on the right, continue right onto Rue d'En Haut and leave the village. Continue along the path which turns left.

(15) At the fork, keep right, cross a road and continue straight on until you reach the entrance to Essart-lès-Bucquoy.

(16) Cross the D8 with care, continue straight on along Chemin de Gommecourt until you reach the entrance to the village. Pass in front of a wood, then the water tower, and cross the village via Rue du Calvaire.

(2) Once on Rue Saint-Martin (D6), turn left until the next junction. Turn right and, following the route back in the opposite direction, head to Hébuterne Town Hall (S/E).
