From Apt to Sivergues via the Rocher des Druides

This first stage is mainly uphill, leading to the foot of the western part of the Grand Luberon ridges. Halfway through, there is a descent to pass by the foot of the Rocher des Druides and the hamlet of Roscalière, followed by a climb back up. It is possible to avoid this detour and thus shorten the stage.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of the Grand Luberon

Description of the walk

Start from Apt bus station. See practical information for access.

Signposts at major junctions.

No signposting

(S) Head back down towards the town, go round a large roundabout on the left and cross a car park. Arrive at the foot of the Porte de Saignon.

(1) Facing the gate, turn left and walk along the car park on your left. At number 179, take a side road on the right.

Red and white markings

(2) At the junction, go straight on into Avenue des Druides (D114). Go uphill and turn left with the road. Take the first right, Rue des Bassins, towards Sivergues. Go straight up the hill and ignore a dead-end on the right. At a fork, turn left onto Chemin de Saint-Vincent (caution: narrow verges). Ignore a dead end on the left, leave Apt and head uphill. At a junction, continue straight on along Chemin de Saint-Vincent.

(3) Immediately afterwards, at No. 384, turn right. Shortly afterwards, leave the road for a path that starts between No. 384B and No. 384C. At No. 586, rejoin the tarmac road and follow it as it continues. At No. 673, turn right onto the road.

(4) After No. 746, leave the road and take a path on the right, following a low wall on your right. When the path turns right (leading to private property), continue straight on along a footpath. Further on, continue along a wider track. When this turns right, go straight on along a path. You’ll come out onto a track and follow it to the left. Immediately ignore a track coming from the right, then a turn-off to the left. Continue uphill to the “Saint-Vincent” signpost.

Red and yellow markings (rare and faded)

(5) Continue straight on towards Sivergues. When the track turns right, continue straight on along a path. Ignore a turn-off to the left and climb up a cobbled path. At a slight fork, keep right onto a path. Further on, continue along a concrete track and climb. Shortly afterwards, at a crossroads at the edge of a field (no. 1356), take the first path on the left, which remains in the shade. You will soon reach another crossroads in open terrain.

(6) Then take the second left, a gravel track. Ignore a turn-off on the left and follow a lavender field on your left.

(7) At the “Les Claparèdes” signpost, there are two options:
- If you wish to avoid a descent followed by a climb, continue straight on along the track and you will soon rejoin the main route at (11). This shorter route saves around 1.8 km, 100 m of elevation gain and 50 minutes’ walking time.
- As shown on the map, turn left towards the Rocher des Druides de Saignon. Wind your way through the woodland on a flat path. Further on, descend via a few hairpin bends. Pass at the foot of a very large rock (the Rocher des Druides) and turn left onto the path.

(8) At the “Rocher des Druides” signpost, turn right towards Roscalière and continue downhill. Cross a stream and, on the other side, turn right and follow a wall on your left. Ignore a footbridge, turn left again, still following the wall, and head uphill.

Yellow markings

(9) You’ll come out onto a small road; follow it to the right and uphill. Before a left-hand bend, leave the road at the foot of a low wall and go down a flight of steps on the right. Continue uphill along a path. Cross the road and continue along the path opposite, still going uphill. You’ll come out onto a track; first turn right then left to cross a road and reach the “Plaine Lambertes” signpost.

Red and yellow markings

(10) Follow a shaded path towards Sivergues. After a right-hand bend, you’ll come out onto a track at the “Pré des Masques” signpost.

(11) Follow the track to the left. At the stop sign, cross the road and take the smaller road opposite, the Chemin du Pré Clau. When the road bends to the right, turn left onto a path towards Sivergues. After a flat section, head downhill alongside a field of lavender on your right. Continue the descent along a path and, at a three-way junction (signpost), turn left.

(12) At the next junction, turn right (red mountain bike signpost no. 58). Descend along a cobbled path and then a footpath. Cross a stream at the ford and then veer right.

(13) At the fork shortly afterwards, veer left and head uphill. Pass at the foot of limestone cliffs. Climb along a path, then a cobbled track and finally a stony path. At a T-junction, go left.

(14) At the next junction, go straight on towards Castellas. Walk past a car park on your left, at the far end of which there is a water tap. Continue straight on and walk past the town hall on your left. Follow a small road that climbs steadily. At the end of the tarmac, on the right-hand side, is the entrance to the Domaine de Castellas (E).

Notes

Equipment:
- Hiking boots required.
- Sun protection recommended depending on the season.
- Bring a supply of water.

Accommodation the night before departure and access to the starting point (S):
- Several hotels in Apt; search using your preferred search engine. Suggestion: Hôtel l'Aptois, 289 cours Lauze Perret, right next to the Porte de Saignon (start the hike from there (1)). No restaurant. Tel.: 04 90 74 02 02; email: contact@aptois-hotel.fr.
- There are several restaurants in Apt, particularly in the old town.
- Apt is served by several Zou bus routes, notably the 909 from Aix-en-Provence and the 915 from Avignon. Timetables: check the Zou website. No bookings accepted; pay the driver (€2.50 per person, regardless of the journey, as of April 2026).

Route and guidance:
- Most of the walk is on stony paths and tracks. There are a few tarmac sections, particularly when leaving Apt.
- We recommend following the route using the Visorando app or, failing that, a detailed map (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

Facilities along the way:
- All shops in Apt (S). Market on Saturday mornings, in the car park between (S) and (4).
- Water point and picnic tables at the Sivergues car park (14).

Accommodation and catering on arrival:
Domaine du Castellas(spelled with a single ‘l’ on the map). Tel: 04 90 04 00 65. Restaurant and breakfast. High-quality service. This very expensive accommodation is unusual for a multi-day hike, but hikers are made to feel very welcome. It was chosen due to the scarcity of accommodation in the area and its proximity to the Luberon ridges, making the next day’s stage accessible.

Hike completed by the author on 20 April 2026.

Worth a visit

- Beautiful views of the Monts de Vaucluse and Mont Ventoux to the north, and the Mourre Nègre to the south.
- Rocher des Druides, shortly before (8).
- The charming hamlet of Roscalière (9).
