Description of the walk

Park in the hamlet of Novallay, where there are a few spaces in a small car park.

(S/E) Continue along the tarmac road until you reach the sign for Crève-Tête. Then follow the paved slanting street (sloping, paved or stony path) to the right, turn left after about 150m and you will reach a crossroads.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the paved slanting street (you will return via the path on the right). The paved slanting street ends and gradually gives way to a trail that climbs towards the Col du Gollet.

(2) Take the path on the right that climbs through the meadows to Col du Gollet (ignore all the paths on the left).

(3) At the pass (below Valmorel resort), turn right and head towards the Gollet ski lift arrival point. Then follow the path on the right which climbs towards Crève-Tête. A steep, winding climb takes you to the summit (magnificent views and a beautiful summit cross).

(4) Take the ridge path to the north, which crosses the Crève-Tête pastures. It descends gradually to the intersection that leads back to Valmorel on the left and Novallay on the right.

(5) Turn right towards Novallay. The path descends through meadows and then forest until it joins a track (the descent can be tricky in places).

(6) Follow the track south-southwest, then the path that leads gently towards Novallay.

(7) At this fork, take the path on the right (the one on the left goes directly to Novallay).

(1) At the intersection, turn left onto the paved slanting street, then turn right. At the road, turn left to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Standard hiking equipment. A slightly exposed section just before the summit.

I highly recommend the Belleville Valley walking and mountain biking map (1:33,000 scale map based on IGN data), available from tourist offices in the valley.

Do it on 28 September. A few people on the way up, no one on the way back down. In my opinion, it doesn't deserve to be described as very difficult. Let's say moderate instead. My GPS recorded 1,000 metres and 2 hours to reach the summit. The first snowflakes were clinging here and there to the rocks. Absolutely magnificent view at the summit. La Grande Casse, Les Aiguilles, Mont Blanc, etc. On the descent, you could imagine you were in the Appalachians, with the path winding between pine trees and rocky outcrops. Everywhere you look, Mont Blanc is the compass visible in the distance. Definitely worth doing if you're in the area.

A very beautiful hike! The climb is steep but not particularly difficult from a technical standpoint (two short sections with handrails).
Throughout the climb, there are beautiful views of the Belleville Valley and then the Valmorel Valley after the Col du Gollet. Once at the summit, the 360-degree view is magnificent (orientation table). The first part of the descent is facing Mont Blanc, then through a pine forest.
It should be noted that, contrary to older comments, the path through the forest is pleasant and tractor tracks are no longer visible.

We set off at 10:00am in 22°C heat. From the start to point 3 (roughly the first 500 metres of elevation gain), there was little air, full sun and it was quite exhausting. The view of the Belleville Valley is breathtaking. The final climb offers an exceptional 360-degree view, from Barre des Écrins to Mont Blanc, via Grande Casse and Cheval Noir. The descent is in the shade of the forest with snow-capped mountains in the background. Magnificent.

Hello,
Just to clarify, the two or three "tricky" sections at the summit are equipped with cables.

We hiked in the opposite direction to the description to enjoy the scenery more on the way down. The forest section towards Longecha is quite long, and roadworks have made the trail muddy in places.
The flora is still very much in evidence in July, which doesn't spoil anything.

Hello,
This is a very beautiful hike, especially in spring when the colours of the flora are magnificent. The hike is quite strenuous, but the landscape is so pleasant that it doesn't matter. The view from Crève-tête over Valmorel is superb, with lots of animals roaming around the summit – it's sublime!
On the way back, the path through the forest isn't great. The ground has been churned up by tractors over a long stretch, so you might as well go back down the original path (in my opinion).
Enjoy your walk, everyone!
