Crève-Tête circular from Valmorel

A beautiful summit offering extensive views of the Savoyard mountains, with a very pleasant ridge walk to begin the descent. A long hike, the ascent of which can be halved by using a cable car (see the alternative route in the practical information section).

Description of the walk

Departure from Valmorel station. Park in the free car park next to the "Le Pierrier" and "Le Cheval Noir" residences, just before the "Cheval Noir" and "Cheval Blanc" covered car parks. To access the car park, drive through the village and turn left under the Pierrafort cable car departure point.

There are signposts at all major intersections along the route.

Without signposts

(S/E) Continue along the road to its end (towards the east). Go around the entrance to the covered car parks on the left. At the roundabout, continue along the road closed to traffic and walk alongside a large building on your right. At the junction just before a ski lift line, turn right and walk a few dozen metres along the line on your left.

(1) At the edge of the forest (ski lift pylon no. 6; signpost "Le Cheval Blanc"), leave the road on the left, pass under the ski lift line and take a path towards Les Bachals and the Col du Gollet. Climb up, cross a stream. Follow a few bends through the forest and arrive at more open terrain.

(2) Go over a small cattle grid and cross an alpine pasture. Descend slightly, leave the pasture and re-enter the forest. Walk along the gently sloping hillside, crossing two streams. Climb back up to the alpine pasture and come out onto a track at the Chalet des Bachals.

(3) Turn right and follow the track south, leaving the chalet on your left.

(4) At the first hairpin bend on the left, leave the track and follow the Chemin des Chasseurs towards the Col du Gollet. Climb steadily up the hillside, heading south-south-west then south-west, through shrubbery.

(5) Shortly before Col du Gollet, at the ski lift of the same name, leave the path and turn left onto a trail towards Crève Tête. Follow the switchbacks through the mountain pasture. Reach the ridge and continue along the hillside to reach a small, unnamed pass (avalanche triggering device).

(6) Continue along steeper switchbacks, amid increasingly numerous boulders and on a rockier path. You will come across several tracks marked with pink paint dots: do not follow these very steep tracks, as the usual path is steep enough. After a final left turn in a grassy area, you will reach the summit (metal cross).

Yellow and white markings (old)

(7) From the summit, retrace your steps for a few metres and turn immediately left (leaving the path you took on the way up on your right). Descend the ridge. A short distance from the summit, go around a small landslide on the left (use your hands). Continue descending, either straight or alternating zigzags, on the ridge or slightly below, on a very pleasant path through a beautifully flowered mountain pasture (in season).

(8) At Longecha, continue straight on towards Plan Pierre Larron (ignore the path that branches off to the right towards the Belleville Valley). Descend in zigzags through a more wooded area. Cross a grassy track and continue on the path towards Les Bachals. Follow a few switchbacks through the forest and come out onto a track. Follow this track to the left, then soon turn right with it and leave the Refuge Pierre Larron on your left. Ignore a vague start on the left and pass at the foot of an isolated rock block on the right-hand side.

No markings

(9) At the next junction, turn left onto the Route Forestière Pierre Larron towards Les Bachals. Continue downhill on this wide track, ignoring all the paths branching off to the sides.

(4) Turn right at the hairpin bend and pass the Chalet des Bachals on your right.

(3) At the signpost and just before a picnic table, take a sharp left onto the path towards Valmorel. Through mountain pastures and forests, follow the same route as on the way there in the opposite direction.

(2) Continue downhill through the forest.

(1) Turn right onto the small road and left at the next junction. You will soon reach the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are essential. The climb to the summit, between (5) and (7), is steep and requires sure-footedness; walking sticks may be useful. Bring warm clothing and rain gear, as well as sun protection.

Shelter and picnic tables at the Pierre Larron and Bachals chalets, which appear to be unmanned refuges. The only water source is at the Bachals chalet, but its potability is not guaranteed: bring your own supplies. A 1:25,000 map is required (at least the one accompanying this description).

Variation by cable car:
By taking the Pierrafort cable car, it is possible to halve the climb. The cable car departure station is located near the departure car park. In summer 2016, the cable car operated from 8.30am to 4.45pm on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. The pedestrian crossing cost €9.10 per person.
With your back to the cable car arrival station, head towards a small chalet, leave this chalet on your right, take a cattle grid and cross a stream. Then follow a trail to the northeast that climbs gently diagonally to the Col du Gollet. At the pass, turn left towards Crève Tête and, before reaching the ski lift, turn right onto the path that climbs to the summit. Follow the main route from (5) to the car park near the cable car departure station (S/E).
Allow for a 550m ascent and 1000m descent, and around 1½ hours to climb to the summit and 3 to 3½ hours to descend.

Hike completed by the author on 25 July 2016.

Worth a visit

Panoramic views of the Lauzière mountain range to the west, Beaufortin and Mont Blanc to the north, and Vanoise to the south-east.

Very pleasant walk along the ridge between the summit (7) and Longecha (8).

The hike is sublime, the landscapes are very diverse and the passage over the ridges on stages 8 to 9 is magical.
The 360-degree view of the Alps from the summit is incredible.
The climb between points 5 and 6 is quite long, and the path is not necessarily very pleasant. But the rest of the climb to the summit is magnificent.
There is little shade until the descent.
There are few people on the route.

A magnificent hike, especially after Crève-tête, on a beautiful ridge trail. What's more, the weather was perfect that day.
An interesting alternative would be to climb up the path known as the waterfall trail rather than taking the same route back.
I do not share the reservations about people who are prone to vertigo: if you have to use your hands once or twice, it is always easy and, above all, never exposed.
It is best to avoid the day when the Pierrafort cable car is operating, as this significantly increases the number of people on the trail.

We really enjoyed this hike. It combines several different environments, starting with pastures, then a dirt path that winds towards the chairlift, then turns into an explosion of flowers on the hillside. After the beauty of the flowers comes the difficult part of a short climb to Creve Tete. The path is narrow and rocky, and there is a metal cable to hold on to. If you suffer from vertigo, I would not recommend it. It is worth climbing to the top as the panoramic views are magnificent over two valleys. From the cross at the head of Creve, the descent is along the ridge line which is very picturesque through the trees and varied terrain. We walked this route in May 2020. In fact, there wasn't much snow in this area in March and April - if there had been more snow in March and April, I think this route would have been impossible to cross as the highest points would still have been covered in snow in May.

A superb route with exceptional panoramic views. The section along the ridge is magnificent.
The location of the car park at the start of the route needs to be clarified: you have to drive through the village and then turn left under the Pierrafort cable car station.

A beautiful route with stunning views of Valmorel and La Lauzière on one side, and the Tarentaise valleys on the other.
A very steady climb on beautiful, well-marked paths.
The final stretch to the summit is very steep, but not difficult.
A particularly pleasant route along the ridge (we saw two eagles there) and
the descent that follows (lovely little valleys covered in flowers).
