At the Béranger car park, you will find the trailhead sign (circuit no. 1 of the Roc de la Lune).
(S/E) Cross the charming hamlet of Béranger before climbing up a narrow lane to find the start of the trail (an alpine road). The start is quite steep (your legs will burn a little). The road then gives way to a trail.
(1) At this intersection, follow the signs for Col de la Lune. The trail descends slightly into a forest until the next intersection.
(2) Turn right and climb the short steep slope to a small pass. Continue straight ahead to climb to the summit of Roc de la Lune.
(3) Turn right towards Plan du Gollet and Col de Leschaux (signpost). Another short steep climb along a ridge takes you to Plan du Gollet. Continue and join the Col de Lechaux (signpost).
(4) At the pass, head towards Croix Jean-Claude and Plan du Genièvre (signpost). You will quickly reach the Plan du Genièvre signpost. Continue towards Dos de Crêt Voland and Croix Jean-Claude. You will arrive at a magnificent high-altitude plateau with superb views. At Dos de Crêt Voland, follow Croix Jean-Claude. Continue along the trail, enjoying the scenery, until you reach Croix Jean-Claude.
Alternative route: see Practical Information
(5) Below you is the Méribel valley. Continue towards the Plateau de Leschaux and Le Verdet (sign). Descend and arrive at the Col de Jean.
(6) Follow the signs for Le Grand Lac and Le Verdet. Pass by the lake (a large puddle in mid-July) and start climbing again before turning right.
(7) Turn right (be careful, the fork is not very visible) and descend to the next intersection. On your right is another small lake.
(8) Head towards Béranger (signposted), i.e. the path that descends gently to the hamlet of Cacabeurre. When you reach a track, follow it to the next hamlet, Les Dogettes, passing through Les Fleurettes.
(9) Continue to follow the signs for Béranger. The path leads easily back to the car park where you started (S/E).
