Description of the walk

Start at the foot of the “La Forêt” bus stop, at a junction, in the resort of Valmorel. Car parks are available at the roadside on either side of the bus stop.

(S/E) Head towards the top of the resort. Pass close to the Altispace chairlift departure point, make a loop and pass under the chairlift line. Then pass close to the Pierrafort gondola lift departure point and turn right (south-west).

(1) At a fork, turn right towards Altispace and the Col de la Madeleine. Follow a long, winding climb up to the top station of the Altispace chairlift.

(2) From the top station of the chairlift, take the wide mountain pasture track heading south and pass a mountain bar-restaurant on your left. At the bottom, at the T-junction, follow the track to the left. At the next junction, take the mountain pasture track climbing to the right. Climb towards the top station of the “Morel 2020” chairlift.

(3) Pass the top station on your left and continue along the track which descends gently. At a fork at a place called Riondet, take the track on the left towards the Col de la Madeleine. Follow the track as it climbs steadily. The gradient steepens towards the end of the climb and, at a fork, follow the track on the left for a short, steeper ascent.

(4) Pass under the large sign for “Sommet de la Madeleine” (map) and head towards the top station of the “Le Frêne” chairlift. Then head south onto a faint path that starts to the right of a ski run flanked by wooden signs. The path stays on the hillside, skirting the 2305m ridge to the right (brief steep section). Pass under a ski lift line and head east. Cross a relatively flat area to a plateau. The slope then becomes much steeper and the path winds between the rocks: follow the cairns and some yellow paint markings. After several hairpin bends, reach the Col du Cheval Noir: the landscape is magical.

(5) At the pass, turn left and follow the path almost to the summit. Follow the north-eastern ridge. Before reaching the rock face, the path veers right and climbs diagonally. Then make a few switchbacks before turning left (north) for a final, very steep climb to the summit, where you are rewarded with an incredible 360° view (so beautiful it is hard to describe).

(6) The descent follows the same route, down to the Col du Cheval Noir and then carefully down to the end of the scree slope. You’ll end up at La Madeleine.

(4) Then follow a track heading westwards which descends, winds around a few bends and leads to the Col de la Madeleine.

(7) Just before reaching the pass, take the path on the right towards Baudin-Combelouvière and Valmorel. Descend to a track.

(8) Cross the Torrent d'Eau Rousse and follow the track for a few hundred metres, then continue north-east to the foot of the Chalet des Lanches.

(9) Continue along the path north-east and pass above the villages of Les Celliers (magnificent view of this beautiful valley).

(10) At the parallel ski lift lines, turn right then immediately left towards Valmorel. At the flat section (large signpost), turn right. Descend to Montolivet.

(11) At the junction, turn right (south) and follow a good mountain track to reach the bottom of the Lanchettes chairlift line. Pass under the line, head up the road and you will soon reach the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Pack the following in your rucksack:
- Water (plenty).
- Warm clothing and a windbreaker (over 2,800m at the summit).
- A 1:25,000 map – essential as signposting is virtually non-existent and poorly marked.
- A camera.

Make sure you have very good shoes and a walking stick to help you stay steady on the slightly tricky sections.

Shorter alternatives:
- From the top station of the Altispace chairlift (operates on certain weekdays in summer; check in advance). Follow the route from the point (2) to the summit. Return via the same route. Allow for around 1,000m of elevation gain and a 6-hour walk for the round trip. Descend to Valmorel either by chairlift or via the path taken on the ascent during this hike (between (2) and (S/E)).
- From the Col de la Madeleine (7) Follow the track heading east-southeast and climb up to La Madeleine (4). Then follow the route to the summit (6). Return to the Col de la Madeleine via the same route.

The estimated time is a bit off – it actually took 9 hours. No particular difficulties.

A lovely hike. I find the moderators’ comments often quite harsh, to the point of putting you off posting new hikes.
It’s clear that the route requires proper preparation. These days, GPS tracking is widely available on smartphones (with the GPS base map available for around €20 a year via this site!). It’s a significant safety feature when heading into the high mountains. In my opinion, not everything can be described perfectly in writing.
For me, there are no major difficulties apart from the length of the route, but it’s well worth it!

There are no signposts along the route through the scree and boulders, so it’s tricky to find the right path; watch out for loose stones. The descent is no problem, as the path is clearly visible. There’s a stunning 360° view from the summit. We set off from the Col de la Madeleine.

Having passed the age where we can tackle a 1,700-metre elevation gain in a single day, we set off from the top station of the Altispace chairlift. Separately, we have hiked other sections of this long route (notably the descent from Le Biard, but as an ascent).

As things stand, a 1:25,000 map or a GPS track are essential, as the description lacks landmarks on the ground (for example, when, above the Col de la Madeleine, you need to join a path on the mountainside). From the Altispace to this point, allow around an hour’s walk rather than two hours.

I would like to qualify two warnings:
- Regarding the ascent of the Col du Cheval Noir, the section is described as “very steep”. There is indeed a steep section at the start of the path, but this section is very short; it does not apply to the entire ascent to the pass (an ascent with a “steep” gradient, I can confirm).
- Regarding the final ascent, it is described as“Straight on, right at the limit of grip”. Straight on, certainly, very steep, without a doubt, but you have a firm footing, with no sense of instability.

A very beautiful hike nonetheless!

You can set off from the Chalets du Cours d'En Haut (1,921 m) – there’s a small car park on the track. Head up via the Sentier des Lacs trail, then along the edge of the Roc Blanc (some exposed sections) – dry weather is recommended! A new statue has been erected at the summit. The return journey can be made via the descent, taking the Col de la Madeleine path, then turning left onto a path leading towards Lac Blanc, which allows you to cross back to the starting point.
