The walk starts from the car park on the right as you leave Vars-les-Claux, heading up towards the pass.
(S/E) Take the path that starts between the toboggan run and the golf driving range, heading left towards the Col de Vars and the Refuge Napoléon. The path is well-marked with yellow and purple signposts.
A few dozen metres before reaching the Refuge Napoléon – which you can see on the left-hand side of the road below – there is a Fork in the road.
(1) Take the right-hand branch, which climbs uphill. When you reach the altiport, turn right of the building, then continue along a path below the road that climbs up to the Col de Vars, passing close to some picnic tables.
(2) Ignore the access to the road on the left and continue along the path, going round the buildings on the right.
(3) At the pass, cross the D902 road, follow it for a few metres to the right and take the path that climbs to the left of the shop. This path is no longer signposted but is clearly marked. It goes round the headland and joins a track after a few hundred metres.
(4) Take the track to the right; it will take you back to the pass.
(3) Cross the road again, follow it up to the right and take the path that climbs towards the Pointe de l’Eyssina. You’ll come to a fork.
(5) Ignore the path on the left which climbs off to the left towards Vars via the Combe Froide (this route is a slightly longer alternative) and turn right onto the path which winds through the mountain pastures until you reach another fork.
(6) Turn left, leaving “Vars via Les Myrtilles” on your right.
(7) At the fork, take the path on the left coming from the Combe Froide. Head down opposite, then follow the path which climbs to the left and quickly veers to the right. The path passes under a chairlift, crosses a ridge and then winds its way down to the base of a ski lift, which you go round to the right. The path climbs slightly to the left, then veers to the right and passes under a bridge (under the ski lifts).
(8) At the bridge, take the path on the right which climbs slightly, then descends after a few dozen metres and turns right before the gondola lift.
9)7 Follow it until you reach a bridge (under a ski run), which you pass under.
(10) Continue straight on along the path to the buildings at Vars-les-Claux.
Cross the car park and, just before a building (a small tower), turn right onto a path that takes you straight back to the car park where you started.
. Bear in mind it’s almost always sunny.
