Access: from Vars, go to the hamlet of Sainte-Catherine. There, turn left at a sawmill onto a road that is initially tarmac but quickly becomes stony. It heads north, then returns south. When you come to a no-vehicle sign, turn left and drive up to the car park before the sheepfold if the condition of the track and your vehicle allow it. Otherwise, there are several places to park without obstructing traffic.
(S/E) Now follow the yellow markings towards Lac des Neuf Couleurs and La Mortice.
(1) Leave the path on your left, which will be used as a shortcut on the way down, and continue following the markings.
(2) At the upper car park, in the hairpin bend, leave the wide track and take the path opposite. This heads south-east and joins the ridge.
(3) Cross over to the other side and head for the Col de Serennes.
(4). The lake is 5 minutes from the pass. Head to Lac des Neuf Couleurs.
(5) After the lake, the going gets tough. Follow the yellowPR®-style markings, yellow arrows and cairns carefully.
Climb up, keeping to the left on steep scree until you reach a vast cirque with (in mid-July) a few snowfields. Cross southwards, following the cairns towards the south summit of La Mortice.
(6) You can then return by following the ridge to the Téboulis summit. Return via the same route.
(2) It is possible to shorten the route a little at the end (at the upper car park) by avoiding some of the hairpin bends on the track and crossing a beautiful lawn to reach the car park (S/E).
