Description of the walk

Access: from Vars, go to the hamlet of Sainte-Catherine. There, turn left at a sawmill onto a road that is initially tarmac but quickly becomes stony. It heads north, then returns south. When you come to a no-vehicle sign, turn left and drive up to the car park before the sheepfold if the condition of the track and your vehicle allow it. Otherwise, there are several places to park without obstructing traffic.

(S/E) Now follow the yellow markings towards Lac des Neuf Couleurs and La Mortice.

(1) Leave the path on your left, which will be used as a shortcut on the way down, and continue following the markings.

(2) At the upper car park, in the hairpin bend, leave the wide track and take the path opposite. This heads south-east and joins the ridge.

(3) Cross over to the other side and head for the Col de Serennes.

(4). The lake is 5 minutes from the pass. Head to Lac des Neuf Couleurs.

(5) After the lake, the going gets tough. Follow the yellowPR®-style markings, yellow arrows and cairns carefully.
Climb up, keeping to the left on steep scree until you reach a vast cirque with (in mid-July) a few snowfields. Cross southwards, following the cairns towards the south summit of La Mortice.

(6) You can then return by following the ridge to the Téboulis summit. Return via the same route.

(2) It is possible to shorten the route a little at the end (at the upper car park) by avoiding some of the hairpin bends on the track and crossing a beautiful lawn to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the section beyond the Col de Sérennes is very rocky. Set off early enough to avoid the frequent storms in the late afternoon.

A very beautiful and enjoyable hike with lots of different landscapes. From the car park to the summit, you can see marmots and ibex. The hike is a bit steep but it's worth it for the beautiful view at the top

A very pleasant hike if you want to reach your first 3,000-metre peak, as it is not very difficult (a few steep slopes in places).
It starts in the mountain pastures and goes up to the Serenne Pass. Be careful, though, as the balcony path to the pass is starting to crumble in a few small areas due to rockfalls, but it's nothing serious.
After the climb to the small nine-colour lake, the landscape becomes very lunar, but magnificent. The karst cirque is impressive. Don't forget to make a small detour to the chasm, which is over 100 metres deep and well worth a visit .

Be careful! The road to the Couniets car park is very bumpy and there are lots of stones sticking out of the ground. It is strongly recommended that you have a car with high ground clearance, otherwise you will scrape your undercarriage! As proof, there were only five cars in the car park when I returned, with most people arriving from the Basse Rua car park.

We set off from Haute Rua and climbed up Vallon Laugier to reach the Serenne Pass before tackling the climb to the peaks of Mortice.
A magnificent hike, offering stunning views of Font Sancte, Aiguille de Chambeyron, Pic de Panestrel and
the dolomitic Pointe Jean-Rostand or Pic des Houerts.
I made a video with the names of the peaks, showing our route (identical from the pass onwards), the mountain atmosphere and our encounter with the ibex.
