Description of the walk

From the A90, take exit 38 and follow signs for Col de la Madeleine. Stop at the edge of the village of Celliers where the Ruisseau de Bridan is crossed, in a small car park beside the stream.

(S/E) Head down the road, re-enter Celliers and join a path just before the church.

(1) Follow this path to the left, where a sign points to the Logis des Fées. Walk above the village through a field and very quickly enter the forest; continue until you reach the Esserts crossroads

(2) Turn left, continue following signs for Logis des Fées at the next junction, and stay on the path on the right. Continue along a fairly flat track until you reach the avalanche barrier junction.

(3) Continue left, following signs for Logis des Fées and Lac de l’Arpettaz. Pass by an avalanche trigger device and numerous avalanche barriers. Zigzag through the hairpin bends to reach the road. Stay on the path and emerge at the Logis des Fées refuge.

(4) Follow the road uphill; initially tarmac, it turns into a track. Continue, pass three hairpin bends and, after about a hundred metres, reach the junction of a faint path.

(5) Turn right here, follow the track and you’ll reach Lac de l’Arpettaz.

(6) Continue left towards Lac Branlay to reach a fork at a place called Le Grand Plan.

(7) Turn right onto the ridge and, following a faint path, climb a series of small peaks to reach the one just before Pic de Lachat.

(8) Return to the Grand Plan crossroads by the same route.

(7) Turn right, continue on to the hut overlooking the lake, then head towards Lac de Branlay, where you will find the signpost: Lac Branlay.

(9) Walk around the lake. Back at the crossroads, turn right and continue the descent. You will arrive near the Chalet du Queigey, a shepherd’s hut.

(10) Continue on until you reach a crossroads.

(11) Follow the path downhill, which crosses the road five times, and keep heading towards Celliers to return to the car park beside the Ruisseau de Bridan (S/E).

Hello, I did this route in the opposite direction early in the morning (when it was still cool), so it involved a direct climb up the slope towards Lac de Branlay. You inevitably cross the small road leading to the refuge, but otherwise it’s a lovely, unobstructed mountain route leading to a beautiful lake in stunning surroundings.

The onward route towards the Portes de Montmélian (a variation on the Tour du Massif de la Lauzière) keeps the wonder going.

I preferred to finish at Lac d’Arpettaz, following the track and the gently sloping, wooded hairpin bends, partly because this descent from the refuge is thus sheltered (no small matter in the blazing sun). And partly because it’s easier on old knees going this way. And also because, whilst tackling a series of hairpin bends in the shade of the trees, followed by a track, certainly helps to break up the gradient, it is still by far the least attractive part of the route.

We adjusted our route.
When we reached the Chamois Viewpoint, we didn’t turn back.
We followed a lovely path through the rhododendrons that climbed steadily, then we descended towards Lake Arpettaz to have a bite to eat.
We then continued the circular route, passing by Lac du Branlay and back to the Logis des Fées.
It was a lovely hike.
We were due to go and watch the chamois in the evening with a guide, but because of the storm, the trip was cancelled.

A magnificent hike, particularly the upper section, from Lake Arpettaz to the outskirts of Montmélian (point 8). As luck would have it, trail markers were busy preparing the future signposting for the path (7–8), which is definitely not to be missed. Beautiful views of the Lauzière and, at the very top, of the Maurienne and the Bauges. The descent is less interesting from Branlay onwards, but it’s worth noting that it avoids those alpine tracks, which can sometimes be a bit tedious.
In short, superb and highly recommended.
