Description of the walk

Park at La Bâthie, in the hamlet of Chantemerle, Montée du Château.

(S/E) Climb up the Château path to reach the ruins of Chantemerle Castle.

(1) Continue along the path. Further on, ignore the path on the right which descends towards Saint-Didier and continue to Biorges where there is a drinking water point.

(2) Continue to the left, then turn left again onto Rue des Glières and reach a junction.

(3) Follow the track on the right. At the end of the track, continue for 50 m along the edge of the forest, then take the path that climbs to the right, following the red markings. When you reach the small road, follow it to the left for a few dozen metres and leave it on the left to follow a path that crosses the Nant Varin further on and descends to Tours-en-Savoie.

(4) Do not cross the bridge over the Grand Ruisseau but turn left to walk alongside it. Before reaching the first houses, turn left and then right about 50 metres further on. Join the D990 at Les Contamines, where there is a drinking water tap.

(5) Cross the overpass with care and head slightly left across the road. Cross the railway line and follow the road to the left. Walk alongside the EDF regulation reservoir and, at the end, turn right for a few metres.

(6) Turn left and follow the railway line to the level crossing. Cross it to return to the starting point (S/E).

A pleasant walk, with interesting castle ruins.
The climb up to Biorges is straight from the starting point; it’s a bit of a shame to start straight away – a warm-up walk at the bottom would be better.
You can hear the cars quite clearly on the first section, but it gradually quietens down.
Generally speaking, half the walk is through the forest, which is quite pleasant in hot weather.
The descent, on the other hand, isn’t great, as there are fallen leaves on the gravel path. The combination of the two makes the descent rather unstable.
The return journey is in open country.

Hello,
From the hamlet of Chantemerle, it takes about 20 minutes to reach the castle ruins. It’s a very beautiful building; we were pleasantly surprised, as from the RN 90 you wouldn’t imagine it to be so large, and the views of the peaks are stunning. The two information boards are interesting. However, we didn’t complete the circular walk as the intermittent roar of the main road is deafening and spoils the enjoyment of the walk. Just the time it took to climb up to the castle was enough to make our ears ring!

We only managed half of the circular route; because of the bad weather, we turned back, though judging by the map, the second part across the plain seems less interesting....
The castle is definitely worth a visit; it’s not just a pile of ruins.
A hike to recommend when the weather is gloomy and prevents a hike at higher altitudes

The guidebook and map are reliable, and it is essential to consult them carefully
The route runs almost entirely through woodland, so there are few ‘views’. The undergrowth is nevertheless very pleasant.
The ascents and descents are steep. Sturdy footwear is essential.
Parking is tricky. One or two parking spaces at the start of the path (signposted). Otherwise, a few spaces on the other side of the road.
