Description of the walk

Park in the car park along the Route du Grand Village, near its junction with the D990.

(S/E) Return to the D990 and follow it to the left. After crossing the Grand Ruisseau, turn left onto the Impasse des Contamines. After about fifty metres, turn left onto a track suitable for vehicles. At a T-junction, turn left and cross the Stream Le Nant Varin.

(1) Immediately afterwards, turn right. Walk alongside the Grand Ruisseau on your left and the Nant Varin on your right. At the large rock, follow the Nant Varin stream upstream along its right bank for 150 metres to reach the waterfall. Retrace your steps and continue along the path through the woodland to the right of the large rocks. Cross the Grand Ruisseau via the bridge beneath the storage area and continue for about 50 metres.

(2) Leave the track and take the path on the right across the storage area. Continue along the embankment, passing close to the hydroelectric power station. Cross the track to take the path on the embankment and follow the Grand Ruisseau on your right. Go straight on until you reach the Chapelle Saint-Clément (climb the steps).

(3) Go back down the steps from the sea wall and turn right. Cross the canal via the footbridge and continue along the path (IGN map not up to date). Ignore the track on the left and continue along the narrow path until you reach the tarmac road. Turn left onto the Chemin du Château and walk past the castle. Continue straight on to the Sainte-Apollonie Chapel.

(4) Continue south along the Route du Grand Village. After a bend to the right, you’ll reach the car park (S/E).

A walk done with a dog. Very pleasant, lovely scenery, beautiful waterfall. There aren’t many signposts marking the route; you need to follow the instructions carefully, as they’re very clearly explained. Not too much of an uphill climb, so it’s suitable for a family walk.
A lovely walk – definitely worth doing!

A lovely walk at sunrise the morning after a rainy night. The woodland floor was still damp, which made for a very pleasant walk. About an hour’s walk.

A lovely, enjoyable family walk – best done in dry weather – one we’d definitely do again.
