The two rocks: Rocher du Diable and Rocher du Calice

This moderate-difficulty hike takes you through the forest to discover Abreschwiller and its hamlet of Le Grand Soldat.
After the climb to the Roche du Diable, the route descends towards the hamlet of Le Grand Soldat, where you can see the house of Alexandre Chatrian (1826–1890), a writer born in this hamlet, before climbing up to the Rocher du Calice.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Chapelle Marie-Médiatrice in Eigenthal, Rue de la Chapelle.

(S/E) Head south along the Blue Disc marked trail. Reach a junction at the edge of the woods.

(1) Continue to the right, following the Blue Disc markings. Leave this trail at the path leading left to the summit of the Rocher du Diable. Reach the summit.

(2) Descend from the Rocher du Diable to the junction, then follow the Red Cross markings to the left, towards Grand Soldat.
At Kysisthal, you can stop at the hunters’ hut, which is open to everyone, for a break and a bite to eat.

(3) Continue to follow the Red Cross markings, keeping to the right at the junction after the hunters’ hut. The forest path emerges from the woods at the Grand Soldat electricity substation.

(4) From there, follow the road section on the right, marked with Yellow Crosses, to reach the start of the Circulaire du Calice (the start of the Circulaire du Calice is opposite the house of Alexandre Chatrian (1826–1890) at No. 7 in Grand Soldat, just before the bend and the Y-junction.

(5) Cross the railway line to the right and take the path on the far right onto the Circulaire du Calice trail, running alongside the house, marked with a Red Ring. This trail goes round the shoulder of Petit Rommelstein and continues generally south-southeast. Cross a track and reach the Rocher du Calice at the top of the ridge.

(6) Opposite the Calice, continue left along the ridge, following the Red Ring markings, towards the Grand Rommelstein.

(7) Enjoy the view from the top of Rommelstein, then head back down towards Place du Bon Dieu, following the Red Ring markings. At the track, follow it to the left for a few dozen metres, then, at the multi-way junction, take the path furthest to the left. Follow the valley, continue along a track and join a road.

(8) Cross the road and the stream, continuing to the left following the Red Ring markings, then the Blue Ring, towards the old Grand Soldat sawmill, which is also the station for the Abreschwiller tourist train.

(9) Turn right onto the road towards Grand Soldat, pass Alexandre Chatrian’s house again, and continue along the road to the bend before the transformer you passed on the way out. Head up to the right to reach the crossroads you encountered on the way out.

(4) Leave the path you took on the way there straight ahead and take the path on the right, towards Nonnembourg, marked with a Yellow Cross. Continue straight on until you reach the summit. This is the most difficult part of the hike.

(10) Once at the summit, head back down towards Eigenthal via the forest path on the left at the junction, then follow the Yellow Cross markings westwards. At the next crossroads, keep to the right, maintaining your direction; after 150 m, turn right towards the north-west.

(11) At the fork, continue downhill to the left, keeping to the path and the markings, and head for the car park at the Chapelle Marie-Médiatrice (S/E).

A pleasant short hike with a superb view of the Grand Rommelstein, but unfortunately the route to the top of the Devil's Rock is not signposted and we couldn't find the path to get there... a shame.

An interesting and relatively easy route. The final climb at the end of the route is quite long and steep in places.
Otherwise, the Roche du Diable and Roche du Calice rocks are very exotic and worth seeing.

(2) – The path is not signposted; retrace your steps a little and take the path furthest to the left.
(4) - Follow the road to the LEFT, not to the right as stated in the description
(5) - Turn your back on the Chatrian house and cross the railway line; if you head left, the path is also signposted for the opposite direction.
(7) - At the junction after Place du Bon Dieu, the path on the left is inconspicuous.
(4) - On the return journey, do not turn off onto the forest track but continue uphill. The climb is not too difficult but quite long, with a fair amount of elevation gain

A pleasant walk, accessible to all and generally well signposted. The stops along the way are interesting and the forest walks very enjoyable. Magnificent view from Grand Rommelstein.

The instructions in the guide aren’t detailed or comprehensive enough. There are no Red Cross marks on the descent from the Devil’s Rock or at the Grand Soldat, so finding your way is a bit of a lottery.
