Route des Landes du Crano

This very pretty route revolves around the Blavet valley, starting from Saint-Nicolas des Eaux, and allows you to discover some very interesting natural sites (the banks of the Blavet, Lande du Crano) as well as some remarkable examples of Breton architectural heritage (the semi-troglodytic chapel of Saint-Gildas, the noble houses of Bieuzy, the chapel of Saint-Nicodème, the locks).
This walk is fairly well signposted (yellowPR® markings).

Description of the walk

(S/E) Departure from Saint-Nicolas des Eaux. There are plenty of parking spaces along the quays. Start by following the quays southwards to the bridge. Cross the Blavet river and turn right to follow the other bank for about 50 metres.

(1) Take the small path that climbs up to the left. Continue to the road and follow it to the right. You will pass by the Castennec hill, a site that has been occupied since at least Gallo-Roman times. Pass by the Chapelle de la Trinité chapel.

(2) About fifty metres after the chapel, take the path on the left and follow it into the woods to reach the riverbank where the Saint-Gildas Chapel is located.

(3) After visiting this exceptional site, take the path uphill, cross the hamlet and turn left at the crossroads. Descend towards the Gamblen lock and continue along the farm track. A little further on, take the marked path to the left. Then take the small road that leads to the village of Bieuzy.

(4) Pass some very old houses with remarkable architecture and continue to the Saint-Bieuzy Fountain. Dating from the 16th century, it was once reputed to cure rabies. At the fountain, turn right. Leave the village, passing three streets on your right.

(5) Take a path on the right into a wood until you reach La Motte farm.

(6) Cross the farm and continue along the farm track until you reach a small road. Then turn left and continue to Kermouellic.

(7) Take the D1 to the right (caution: busy road) for 300 metres and take the first road on the left. This leads to the hamlet of Kermabon.

(8) Cross the village, turning right. At the junction with the D156, turn left and then immediately right. Continue straight on to the hamlet of Kerhervé. Then stay on the main road, going almost straight ahead to cross the Landes du Crano site.

(9) After a little over a kilometre, follow the path that turns left. When it joins a small road, take another path on the right and continue straight ahead until you reach a farm track. Take it to the right, then turn left to arrive at the Chapel of the True Cross.

(10) At the chapel, turn right, then at the hamlet of Kerdrolan, take the small road on the left. At the first bend, turn onto the farm track on the left.

(11) After one kilometre, take a path on the right that descends towards the Blavet. Then follow the railway line.

(12) At the end of the road, take the underpass on the right under the railway line and continue to the hamlet of Rimaison.

(13) At the crossroads, turn right and cross the bridge. Admire the pretty view of the Rimaison lock as you pass. After 100 metres, take the path on the right. When this farm track turns left to join the Kerdréhouarn farm, turn right, then after 50 metres, turn left. Follow this path and cross a small road.

(14) Descend to the bottom of a valley, cross the stream (trying not to get your feet wet) and then climb back up. When you reach the road, turn left and cross the Kerroc'h farm. At the end of the road that runs straight ahead, turn right towards the Saint-Nicodème Chapel.

(15) Take the time to walk around the chapel (it is only open during the summer) and admire its architecture and the magnificent sculptures on the fountains. Take the path on the right at the fountains. This path runs alongside a stream and leads through the woods to the banks of the Blavet.

(16) Take the towpath on the left, which will take you back to Saint-Nicolas des Eaux (S/E).

An interesting route between forest and river (Blavet)
even if the return journey is via a small paved road before rejoining the Blavet towpath. I recommend it

A very beautiful hike through the countryside, discovering Brittany's heritage.
However, the end of the route along the towpath is less interesting as it is paved and too flat.

A very beautiful hike! Varied, with lots of points of interest: chapels, locks, riverside, viewpoints...
Two downsides: the Crano moors have been largely "razed"!
The return journey is mostly along the road with views of the fields!

A very beautiful hike, beautiful landscapes and interesting heritage sites: St Gildas Chapel, Bieuzy, St Nicodème Chapel, which is very beautiful! Set off for the day with a picnic! Walking sticks may be useful in some places if it is damp.

It is a beautiful circular route, well marked – a few tricky sections on the descent to St Gildas and crossing the stream on the way back up to the plateau leading to St Nicodème require you to be in good physical condition. With varied landscapes and heritage sites, this route offers everything you need for a wonderful afternoon's hiking.
