Route de découverte de Guebwiller

Guebwiller is a small wine-growing town. As the "capital" of Florival, it is nonetheless well worth a visit. In addition to major tourist attractions such as the Saint-Léger and Notre-Dame churches and the Théodore Deck Museum, there are several other points of interest, such as the Parc de la Marseillaise, the military cemetery and Neuenbourg Castle and its grounds. Of course, there are other lesser-known curiosities along this route.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in front of the Florival cinema.

(S/E) Facing the cinema and synagogue on your right, cross the car park to the left, then turn right up Rue du Rempart. At the end, you will reach Place Lecoq.

(1) Cross the square and take the street on the left-hand corner (Rue Saint-Antoine). Take the first right, Rue Ignace Ritter. At the end, turn right onto Rue de la Commanderie, passing the I.M.E Saint-Joseph building on your left. Then keep left twice to take Rue de Bapaume and then Rue de l'Orphelinat. At the end of this street, follow Rue du Général Gouraud to the left until you reach Rue Théodore Deck. Go up this street to the right, pass in front of the war memorial and you will reach the Adventist church.

(2) Turn right onto Rue des Alliés. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue de la République, passing close to the cross on Rue du Général Lebouc. Continue along this street until you reach Saint-Léger Church and the courthouse.

(3) Go around the church on the left, passing in front of the courthouse. Return to Rue de la République at the well. Go down this street. At the next crossroads, note the remains of an old castle to the right of the mini-market. Then pass in front of the house where Lucie and Pierre Kauffmann, two former deportees, lived. Continue along Rue de la République until you reach Guebwiller Town Hall.

(4) Continue down Rue de la République to the third crossroads. Take Rue de l'Hôpital on the left to the former Dominican Convent, now a cultural centre.

(5) Turn back to the crossroads, then first turn left then right to reach the fountain on Place de la Liberté. Facing the fountain, cross the entire square on the left. At the end, on Rue des Fondeurs, turn right onto this street, then turn left onto Rue de la République. Follow this street to Notre-Dame Church and the Théodore Deck Museum.

(6) Turn right onto the street that runs between the church and the museum. Continue to the temple. Once you reach it, take the passage on the left that leads to the castle and Neuenbourg Park.

(7) Facing the castle, continue to the right and walk around the park, staying as close to the edge as possible to return to the castle.

(7) Exit through the main entrance and return to the front of the Théodore Deck Museum.

(6) Turn right down Rue du 4e Régiment de Saphis Marocains and reach the entrance to Parc de la Marseillaise.

(8) Enter the park and walk around it, starting on the right. Then stay along the edge of the park to walk around it, but without leaving it. Then return to the junction you passed on the way in.

(8) When you leave the park, take Avenue des Chasseurs Alpins opposite. At the end, cross the car park and take the path that leads to the old Guebwiller railway station, built above the Lauch.

(9) Walk back a few metres, then follow the path on the left along the river. At the end, at the traffic lights, turn left onto the Guebwiller slip road. Then turn right onto the D3bis. Stay on this road until you reach the Notre-Dame-du-Saering Chapel.

(10) Return to the previous traffic lights and turn right onto Route de Colmar. Pass a cross and stay on the road until the next traffic lights. Then take the second road on the right (Chemin du Kitterlé). At the bend, turn left onto Chemin du Vignoble. Stay on this path until Passage Antoine Nicolas Riggenbach.

(11) Go down the stairs, then turn left down Rue du Général de Gaulle along the old railway line. At the bridge, turn right into Rue du 8 Mai 1945. Continue straight ahead until you reach the traffic lights at the intersection you passed on the way there. Then keep going straight on Rue du Maréchal Joffre until you reach a roundabout.

(12) Take the second exit onto Rue du Vieil Armand, pass the car park entrance and continue to Rue de Reims. Continue straight ahead until you reach a small roundabout. Take the road uphill opposite, then turn left onto Rue du Vieil Armand. Continue along this road, pass the military cemetery car park, then turn left towards the cemetery.

(13) Return along the same road to Rue de Reims. Turn left onto this street and take a passage on the right that leads to a car park. Cross the car park and then go opposite to Rue du Rempart and join the car park in front of the cinema (S/E).
