Route d'Auxonne

Auxonne is a small town with the distinctive feature of being surrounded by Vauban’s fortifications. Situated halfway between Dijon and Dôle, this little town is well worth a visit, whether for the fortifications – which are largely well-preserved – or for the Church of Notre-Dame, the castle or the riverside area along the Saône. This walk takes in all the cultural and tourist sites worth seeing within the town’s fortified walls. The first part of the route allows you to explore Vauban’s ramparts, whilst the second part takes you to discover the monuments in the historic centre.

Description of the walk

Park in the town hall car park. Please note: parking is limited to 4½ hours.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn left onto Boulevard Pasteur. Walk past the military barracks until you reach the roundabout at Place du10e Régiment d’Infanterie. Turn right onto Rue du8e Chasseur. Note the Porte Royale on your right and continue to the roundabout of the same name. Take the first exit towards the Tour du Signe.

(1) Return to the roundabout, turn left, cross the road and continue straight ahead along the small path leading to a car park. Walk through the car park to the harbour.

(2) Turn left and walk alongside it. Near a backwater of the Saône, leave the path on your left to reach the river, which you should follow on your left. Stay along the river until you reach the Pont de France.

(3) Carry on between the fortifications and the Saône. Note the Château Louis XI on your left as you reach the railway line.

(4) Continue along the path to the left, still close to the fortifications. At a children’s playground, keep to the right, then turn left at the next junction. You’ll reach Rue de Labergement; turn left onto this street and follow it to the roundabout at Place de Verdun.

(5) Take the second exit, Boulevard Pasteur, and head towards the Porte de Comté roundabout. Look out for the famous gate on the other side of the roundabout and walk underneath it.

(6) Then continue to the left to cross the Parc du Lion. Next, cut across Boulevard Pasteur and head towards the bandstand. Pass to the left of the bandstand, cross the car park, and keep to the left of the town hall to reach the Place d’Armes, the Church of Notre-Dame and the statue of Napoleon.

(7) Walk round the church on the left to take Rue Carnot on the other side, continuing as far as the Hôtel Jean de la Croix. Return to the level of the church and turn right onto Rue des Halles. At the end of these market halls, take the passage on the right, then keep immediately to the right and then turn left. Cross a car park to reach Rue Ledeuil. Walk down this street on the left. On Rue Vauban, turn left, pass a junction, then turn right onto Rue Sennecey. Turn left onto Rue du Rempart de la Côte d’Or, then head towards the Pont de France.

(3) Leave the bridge on your right and take the promenade opposite, at the top of the ramparts. Then head for the entrance to Château Louis XI.

(8) With your back to the château, take Rue du Port opposite, then Rue du Docteur Gaston Roussel, also opposite. When you reach the high street, Rue Gustave Noblemaire, head up it to the right. Walk past the media library and head towards the Rond-Point de la Porte de Comté. Take Boulevard Pasteur on the left and return to the starting point (S/E).
