Chindonne - Refuge d'Antème

During this fourth stage of the Tour des Dents du Midi, the route offers more magnificent views overlooking the Val-d'Illiez. At Signal de Soi, you can admire the Tête de Chalin, the Cime de l'Est, the cathedral and the Dent Jaune. At the Cabane d'Antème, wonderfully located at the foot of the Haute Cime, you can enjoy a sunset over the Dents du Midi and the Portes du Soleil.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of the Dents du Midi and Petits Perrons

TDM Tour des Dents du Midi signposting

(S) At the exit of the Chindonne inn, return to a track at the level of a ski lift. Follow the Tour des Dents du Midi trail, first heading west, then south-west, passing two chalets.

(1) Shortly after the second chalet, the path splits in two; take the left-hand path. About 200 metres further on, leave a path that climbs up to La Gouille under the Dent de Valerette on your left. Continue on the path that turns 90° south to enter the woods, then follow the mountain pastures to the Valère chalet at the foot of the Dent de Valère.

(2) At the Valère chalet, take the path that climbs uphill, ignoring the one on the right. Shortly afterwards, leave a path on your left that joins the northern ridge of the Dent de Valère. The path then describes an arc bounded by the northern and north-eastern ridges of the Dent, then goes around the north-western ridge and heads south. You will come to another intersection.

(3) Ignore the path to the left towards the Arête du Dardeux and continue south, still on the TDM, which loses about 200 metres in altitude before joining a path below.

(4) Keep heading south on an almost flat section, then start climbing as soon as the path changes direction to the west. Cross several streams and rejoin a track.

(5) Follow this track as it gradually climbs northwards.

(6) Leave the track at a bend and turn south towards the Signal de Soi.

(7) Turn right and climb up the Signal de Soi.

(8) Enjoy the view of the Dents du Midi. Retrace your steps to the TDM trail.

(7) After several hairpin bends, join a track.

(9) Do not take this track and follow the TDM heading south. The trail describes another arc between the Soi ridge and the Sélaire ridge.

(10) Heading south-southeast, follow the TDM to a small lake just before the Antème hut. Retrace your steps a little and head to the Antème hut (E).

Good evening,
The hut keeper welcomed us, prepared supper - a delicious "veg" hash brown casserole - and then went down into the valley, leaving us with a friend/colleague until after breakfast.
We were told "it's a rustic refuge", but I would gladly have stayed there...

Hello C. Oth,
Thank you for your feedback.
It's true that the sunset there is fabulous. I don't know if it's always the same keeper at the Antème hut,
When I did this stage in 2015, after dinner, the keeper played the saxophone on the terrace as an invitation to wait for the sunset.
Yours faithfully
Dominique
