Frazé Castle and manor houses

Frazé’s architectural heritage is exceptional. Frazé Castle and Carcahu Manor are prime examples of this. The castle comprises various structures (15th, 17th and 19th centuries), whilst Carcahu Manor (16th–17th centuries) is unlike any other…

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Château de Frazé.

(S/E) Head east-southeast and walk down Rue du Huit Mai 1945.

(1) After about a hundred metres, turn right onto Rue des Essarts. At the Fork in the road shortly afterwards, follow the D124 to the right.

(2) At the crossroads, turn right towards La Pihourdière (view of the village on the right). Pass the farm and continue along the grassy track.

(3) At the hedge, head down to the right, following the valley. Pass the ford and head back up to the D110.

(4) Follow the road to the left for 1.2 km.

(5) Turn left at Petit Carcahut. Cross the courtyard of the old mill and take a footbridge over a stream. Continue along the hedge.

(6) Turn right onto a small road. Pass through the hamlet known as Le But and come out onto the D368.

(7) Then head downhill to the right and, after about fifty metres, turn left towards Carcahut Manor. Walk past the manor, cross the courtyard to the left, then head right towards the forest. Follow the path (which may be muddy) to La Pichonnière (go round the farm on the left).

(8) You’ll come out onto the D30.3; follow it to the left. Walk alongside a copse, then pass through the hamlet of La Chevillère.

(9) At the junction, veer right and follow the D368 towards Unverre. At the next junction, turn left and, at the first Fork in the road that appears afterwards, veer right.

(10) At La Charonnière, turn left. After the houses, turn right. Follow the edge of a woodland on your right, continue between the fields and you’ll reach the edge of another woodland.

(11) Then veer left, leaving the few houses on your right. When the road bends left (elevation 212), follow a track on the right.

(12) At the next junction, turn left. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the hamlet of La Ferrière. Then turn right and head for the crossroads you passed on the way out.

(2) Then turn right and, following the same route as on the way there but in the opposite direction, head back to the starting car park (S/E).

A very beautiful walk, the castle at the start alone is worth seeing, with manor houses, farms and houses, some of which are fortified, although unfortunately not always clearly visible.
It's a bit of a drive, but we didn't see many cars.
There were only a handful of people, but that was to be expected given the walk.
Hiking boots are still recommended!

Despite the enticing title “Castles and Manor Houses of Frazé”, we were very disappointed with this walk.
During the route, we came across just one manor house, the Grand Carcahut. The route involves a lot of tarmac. We set off mid-morning to have a picnic along the way, but here too we were sorely disappointed: it was impossible to find a suitable spot – such as a bench or picnic table – along the route, so we ended up eating our snack on a verge by the side of the road.
As for Frazé Castle, it is closed and appears to be in a state of neglect; vegetation has taken over much of the surrounding area and the closed shutters look as though they’re about to fall off.
A big compliment to the town hall for the washhouse garden and the flowers throughout the town.

Quite a lot of tarmac, it’s true, but very little traffic. We took a shortcut towards Le Cormier – it looked lovely from the outside, but the gate was firmly shut: a shame? The paths were overgrown with quite tall grass and we were walking during a very wet spell: waterproof shoes are a must!!!! A leisurely walk, with no difficulty at all.

There are lots of tarmac roads, and the proper paths aren’t maintained – there’s very tall grass, nettles…
