Rötteln Castle and Southern Black Forest Nature Park

(S/E) From the car park, walk up to the castle via the small access road. Follow the red diamond to the Schlosshalde signpost.

(1) Take Schlossweg on the left.

(2) Take Hohe Strasse on the right. Continue straight ahead to Trimm-Dich-Pfad, which will be our return route.

(3) Continue straight ahead. Cross the Wanderparkplatz Stern (hiking car park, 50 spaces) and arrive at the road connecting Haagen to Wittlingen (Wittlinger Höhe).

(4) Cross carefully, pass the second car park, the Wanderparkplatz Kleeplatz (110 spaces). Go to the picnic area on the right-hand side of the car park.

(5) Turn around. Cross the road again and retrace your steps to the Trimm-Dich-Pfad fork.

(3) Turn left and follow the red diamond until you reach the Schlosshalde signpost, which marks the start of the outward journey.

(1) Continue left and return to the castle car park (S/E).

Built in the 11th century, damaged by the earthquake of 1356 and destroyed in 1678 during the Dutch War, Rötteln Castle has been partially restored and is open to visitors (€3 including the museum) on weekends from November to mid-March and every day from mid-March to October. There is a breathtaking view from the two towers. There is also a beer garden (Biergarten) open on weekends in winter when the weather is fine and every day during the summer season. The toilets are accessible all year round. A restaurant (Burgschenke) with a variety of culinary offerings completes the picture. The entire complex is owned by the town of Lörrach.
