This fifth stage will take you to the shores of Lake Lugano in Italy, to the small village of San Mamete. You can even swim in the lake at the Albergo Stella del Italia. This route offers several panoramic viewpoints, particularly from the "Denti della Vecchia" massif, where the lake plays hide and seek with the teeth. In Castello, from the Oratory of San Martino, you can enjoy a splendid view of the lake.

Description of the walk

Note: From the start at point 4 of the Capanna Pairolo at Pian di Scagn, follow trail No. 52 "Sentiero Lago di Lugano", marked with this green sign.

(S) From Capanna Pairolo, take trail No. 52 (also the Scenic Trail) towards Denti della Vecchia.

(1) Leave the Scenic Trail and continue on trail No. 52 until you reach a new intersection.

(2) Rejoin the Scenic Trail, which merges with trail No. 52 again, and arrive at the foot of Sasso Grande.

(3) Walk along this magnificent trail that runs alongside the Denti della Vecchia massif.

(4) Continue left on this border path to Pian di Scagn.

(5) Leave Switzerland by turning east and descend gradually towards Alpe de Bolgia (1,121 m).

(6) At Alpe de Bolgia, keep heading east on trail no. 10 until you reach a forest road (no. 7).

(7) Cross the forest track, staying on trail No. 10, and return to Via Alla Derta.

(8) Follow this small road to quickly reach the small village of Castello overlooking Lake Lugano.

(9) Go around Castello and rejoin trail No. 10, which descends to the lake. On the strada statale 340, heading east, go to your evening accommodation: the Hotel "Stella del Italia" (E).

This third stage offers several more viewpoints over the lakes. On this route, you move away from Lake Maggiore and closer to Lake Lugano. At Davrosio, you will recognise Monte Tamaro and Menéra with its antenna. At the Motto della Croce viewpoint, looking south, Lake Lugano is clearly recognisable by the peak that towers above it: Monte San Salvator. A glance to the west allows you to catch a last glimpse of Lake Maggiore.

During this second stage, you will climb the majestic Monte Tamaro. From the summit, heading west to north, you will discover the Monte Rosa massif in the distance, as well as both ends of Lake Maggiore. To the south, Lake Lugano comes into view. At Capanna Tamaro, you can admire the magnificent ridge stretching from Monte Tamaro to Menèra, topped by a huge antenna.
