Reyssas Canal and abandoned farms

Hike along the Reyssas irrigation canal. To maintain a steady gradient, the canal passes through some unlikely and beautiful places. Admire the work of our ancestors. Discover abandoned farms. Hike through the forest, including a majestic larch grove. Beautiful views of Lake Serre-Ponçon.
This hike requires a bit of agility (crossing the Coulet torrent) and balance (walking on a narrow path along the canal). From 12 years old.

Description of the walk

In the hamlet of L'Église, park just before the church in the car park on the left.

(S/E) Take the path that climbs in front of the church, go past the house with a fountain next to it (and a prayer wheel) and climb the path. At the pumping station (1965 on the green door), turn right towards the gate of the church's water catchment area. There is water along the path, either free-flowing or channelled.
Join a forest loop that makes a hairpin bend.
Take the right-hand branch. Shortly afterwards, you will come to a crossroads of forest paths (there is a picnic table on the left). This is where the loop begins.

(1) Turn left and then immediately after, keep to the right. Join the cement pipes, then the open canal. Continue to the Coulet stream.

(2) Cross the stream. As the footbridge has collapsed, take a small detour. This passage requires a little agility. The canal is attached to the walls in metal pipes. A few dozen metres to the left, before the few trees, carefully take the small, very steep path. Go slightly up the stream and tackle the scree for a few metres, using your hands to help you. Rejoin the canal where it enters the pipes.
Follow the canal. A more or less narrow path used by those who maintain the canal.
After 1 km, go around the water hole to reach a forest road.

(3) Continue straight ahead (do not go up to the right).
Pass through another waterfall (Combe de l'Aubrié). Follow a canal that is either:
- either covered by a pipe,
- or open to the air.
This path leads to the first ruins of Les Briand.

(4) Continue and you will see one or two restored houses above the path: Les Touisses.

(5) Then take theGR® path on the right (south-east) signposted Clot Bouffier and climb this small mule track to the second small abandoned hamlet. In the distance, you may see rocks that have recently rolled down from the cliff. In front of the ruins are majestic cherry trees.

(6) Turn right (south) onto the path towards the sign for Les Touisses, Les Méans. Follow this path, which offers new landscapes. The forest road crosses two streams: the Combe de l'Aubrier (metal drinking troughs) and the Ravin de la Pisse. Continue until you reach the forest road coming from the left and making a hairpin bend.

(7) Platform with an underground fire hydrant. 20 metres after a sign on the right indicating Chemin de la Beaume in the opposite direction, take the small path on the right that descends. This path is barely visible at first. It is actually at the level of the hairpin bend. It is marked with green dots. Descend the path until you reach the start of a small valley.

(8) A small path climbs straight ahead while the main path turns left. Turn left and descend along this valley. Walk alongside forests of majestic larch trees. Reach the ruins of Clot Regnaud, which are home to raspberry bushes.

(9) Continue straight ahead and descend steeply. Join a grassy track that descends. Reach the forest road at the crossroads of the loop.

(1) Turn left and follow the same route back to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

The small path that crosses the Coulet is easier to find if you follow the route in the direction indicated.

This hike can only be done in dry weather and should be avoided after heavy rain (you will have to cross the stream and walk on the dyke, which is narrow in places).

You can do the lighter, family-friendly version (suitable for children aged 5 and over), which only takes forest roads: Two small abandoned hamlets above Puy-Saint-Eusèbe. The starting point is at the Chemin de la Baume sign.
You can get there after 3.5 km of forest road by car (no 4x4 required, but the car should not be too low).

In the nearby area

This hike gives an idea of how harsh life in the mountains used to be.

The valleys had to be irrigated by capturing water from the mountains and channelling it down gentle slopes to the fields. This meant digging and sometimes carving into the rock in inaccessible places. Numerous canals run along the mountainsides of the Haute-Durance.

The Reyssas canal, which carries water from the Reyssas torrent to Puy-Saint-Eusèbe, crossing two other torrents, is one of the few that is still maintained. Originally an open canal, it was later channelled in places by cement pipes and, in difficult areas, by metal pipes. This is a task that requires constant work, as can be seen at the Combe de l'Aubrier and the major development work still underway to pass under the torrents and landslides.

How did they measure a constant gradient in an era when altimeters did not exist? According to the elders, the landmarks were taken at night. A fire was lit at the desired location (destination or intermediate stage), which was then targeted at night from the place where the digging was taking place. The angle between the target and a horizontal level gave the gradient to be maintained.

Abandoned farms seem idyllic to us, but their isolation and harsh climate meant that they were abandoned. Perhaps the rocks protruding from the wall also played a part in Clot Bouffier's demise.

Very pleasant and varied - the only difficulty being finding your way when crossing the canal.

Pleasant hike, completed on 31 May 2025 with a group, beautiful views.
However, the difficulty is rated 2 for crossing the stream, which is a real shame.
There were no problems on the board, but we used the handrails installed on the side of the rock to reach the trail, following advice from people we met earlier on the circuit.
As the group was not experienced in via ferrata, we found this solution risky, especially as some of the pitons were loose and the cables were too slack. Not suitable for people who are afraid of heights.

Hike completed on 11 November, so there were quite a few people around.
I parked in the car park on the left, 100 metres before reaching the village.
Very beautiful circuit, the author's historical commentary is a nice bonus. At this time of year, crossing the stream at point 2 was easy. The footbridge is still missing, so you have to go down slightly to the left to cross the stream, then climb back up the embankment using your hands.

A very beautiful hike, easy to do with beautiful views and interesting thanks to the canal and ruins.
Regarding the stream crossing (point 2), there is no difficulty in descending to the left to reach the level of the stream. Without using the simple plank that can serve as a bridge, we forded the stream by walking 1 to 2 metres upstream, then climbed back up to the level of the canal, sometimes using our hands to help us.
At point 6, when you reach the signpost "Clos Bouffier, 1645m", take the path slightly to the right.
At point 7, we did not find a sign for "Chemin de la Beaume". We managed to find the small path, which is actually just to the right as you come off the forest road.

All in all, a very nice, relaxing walk. Thanks to the author.

Crossing the stream (part 2 of the description) is impossible without taking considerable risks. The footbridge has completely collapsed. We have filled in the path.

This is my second or third time, but I can't get enough of it!
The tricky part (at the waterfall) is easier than last time.

It's a change from hiking at high altitude.
You follow irrigation channels that are still in use, sometimes above ground or underground, like the levadas in Madeira. You can hear the sound of water the whole time. You see abandoned farms and deciduous trees rather than larch trees.
Don't do this in wet weather as the path is very narrow in places.
There is a tricky section with a handrail.
An original hike
There are many trail junctions, so follow the recommended route carefully

a very pleasant and refreshing hike thanks to the presence of the canal in all its forms along much of the route.
There is just one slightly tricky section at the Coulet torrent.
The fork at waypoint 7 requires a little attention.
A varied hike that can be completed without difficulty in 3 hours.

Hello.
The route is partially marked in yellow up to point 5.
Point 2: to cross the Coulet stream: when the canal emerges from a pipe, ignore the path climbing to the right and descend to the left after crossing a horizontal wire; at the bottom, 2-3 yellow markers will help you.
Point 7: the sign on the right does not say "Chemin"; cross a similar wire to find the small path; the left turn is only a few dozen metres away. The path down to Clot Regnaud is not very visible!
Thank you for your feedback, Baudouin

Very nice hike. On the way back, we left the main trail to pick up the small path (probably the old trail) that can be seen on the entire IGN map and marked by a cairn. This avoids the long descent down the trail and is more rugged. As a result, you don't pass the cistern and rejoin the route described in point 8. A very nice and varied hike.

I did this trail with my wife and children (a 12-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, who are quite athletic but new to hiking).
The section crossing the Coulet torrent is indeed a little tricky, but if you go to the left and climb up alongside the vegetation after crossing, it's like steps and you can get through with a bit of climbing (good shoes are recommended though). The path is then narrow and quite vertiginous at first, but the feeling of emptiness diminishes when you re-enter the forest.
We almost missed the Briands ruins, which are hidden in the vegetation below the path.
For the descent, we preferred to leave the forest path (GR50), which offers a beautiful view of the lake but is in full sun, and take the Clôt Regnaud, which is served by a path that is steep in places but very shady. This path starts about 200m after the second stream you come to since the Bouffier fence, right next to a tree marked with a yellow sign. It leads to the picnic table at the start of the loop, so we're back where we started.
All in all, this hike is very pleasant, uncrowded (we only encountered two motorcyclists on the way back along the forest path), shaded, and you can cool off with water from the canals if it gets too hot. The children complained a little on the steepest climbs (at the start of the route and at the junction with the GR50 in particular) but got through without any problems, and the rest is generally gently sloping.
It took us four hours, including breaks and a picnic.
The vast majority of the route is marked with yellow signs, which I don't think is mentioned in the guidebook.
I would like to emphasise how accurate the guidebook is, and I would like to thank its author for sharing it.
