The route starts from the bend in the D921 (1,735 m) on the road leading up from the village of Gavarnie to the Gavarnie-Gèdre-les Espécières resort.
Park in the small car park at the bend. Before 9 am, you may be able to find a proper parking space; after that, you’ll probably have to park on the roadside.
(S/E) At the tip of the bend, head due north across the snow-covered embankment. Depending on the season and snow conditions, you can put on your snowshoes here or continue in your walking boots. Begin the ascent directly towards the north-west. Follow the tracks of skiers or snowshoers heading uphill, almost exactly along the dotted line on the summer trail map.
Depending on snow conditions and the season, the path may be visible, cleared of snow or, conversely, buried under a layer of snow.
After 100 m, cross the Ruisseau de Peyrenère and continue on to reach the ridge.
Continue along the ridge heading north, then north-west.
Reach the edge of the Serres des Tousaus, at an elevation of 1,783 metres, by joining theGR®10.
(1) Make your way to the viewpoint (1,870 m) along the metal fence. Enjoy the unobstructed view of the Bois de Saint-Savin below, as well as the Ossoue valley and the road leading to the Ossoue Dam.
Follow the existing tracks or make your own way westwards, towards the Cabane des Tousaus (1,835 m).
(2) You’ll reach the hut easily, with its metal ‘cuyalas’ (enclosure) clearly visible from a distance.
After a break of varying length, leave the hut heading south, climbing up the slope.
(3) Head for the 1,872-metre mark. From there, just for the fun of a bit of climbing and descending, head straight up the slope towards the summit of the nearby hill at around 1,930 m.
Then head back down and rejoin the track you took on the way up (the one before reaching the hut).
All these undulating mountain pastures of Peyrenère can be explored safely, both on the way up and on the way down – even if that means sliding down on your bum! If you have time, you can make several round trips.
Then head back towards the Ruisseau de Peyrenère and the ridge where the walk began.
Don’t hesitate to take a shortcut from the ridge, without following the path you took on the way up.
This will take you back to the bend by the car park (S/E).
