Puy de Sancy circular walk from Mont-Dore

Starting from Mont-Dore, at the foot of the majestic Puy de Sancy, this route is the best way to appreciate the spectacular, unspoilt landscapes of the beautiful Sancy volcanic massif. With breathtaking scenery, exceptional flora and remarkable fauna, the Sancy region lies at the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park.

Description of the walk

Departure from the tourist information centre, Avenue de la Libération, 63240 Mont-Dore, paid car park

(S/E) Walk down towards the town centre, crossing the Dordogne, and continue along Rue Duchatel. Turn left onto Avenue Georges Clémenceau, then turn right onto Rue des Déportés.

(1) Take the steps on the right (GR® red/white markings, and the Tour du Sancy marked in green) which lead up to the Chemin de Melchi Roze.

(2) Turn right and follow the path, which then climbs towards the Grande Cascade. Follow the road to the left for 50 m, then take the path on the right up to the Grande Cascade.

(3) At the junction, continue straight ahead along the path to reach the Plateau de Durbise.

(4) At the junction, continue slightly to the right, heading south, then climb up to the Roc de Cuzeau, before passing the Col de Cuzeau and the various peaks.

(5) Turn left to pass beneath the Ferrand Nord ski lift. Cross the Col de la Cabane via a farm track, keeping to the right, and continue along the steep path which climbs to the Puy de Sancy and its orientation point.

(6) Head back down the path via the wooden steps.

(7) At the Pas de l’Âne junction, veer left to follow the path (after the steps, the cable car is 400 metres to the right). Continue along the path, ignoring a turn-off to the right for the Val de Courre.

(8) Pass the Aiguille and the Puy de Cliergue, then the Carrière.

(9) Follow the road at the hut situated below the Pic du Capucin, to descend to the Salon du Capucin.

(10) End of the red/white markings. Turn right and follow the tarmac path leading to the upper station of the funicular. Take the path on your left, the Chemin des Mille Gouttes, which leads back down to Avenue de la Libération. Turn left, cross the avenue and you’ll reach the tourist office (S/E).
