Circular Pré Carré and Artigues from Saleich

This hike takes place on good tracks and forest roads, through beautiful forests of beech, ash, chestnut, boxwood and other trees. The descent is mainly on less comfortable paths, which require a little more attention as they are less well-trodden. The yellow markings are good, but seem to have been scratched and partially erased between points (8) and (9). The route, which is mostly in the shade, can be done in any season. However, avoid periods of fog due to the reported problem of poor markings on part of the route.

Description of the walk

From Mane or Saint-Girons, take the D117, then the D60 towards Saleich, and park in the town hall square: limited space.

(S/E) Take Rue de la Borio southwards, passing to the right of the castle ruins, and continue straight ahead to reach the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Vallates. Pass above it to find the junction that marks the start of the trail.

(1) Take the path on the right, returning via the path on the left. Enter the forest and continue climbing until you reach a track. Follow it to the left for a few metres until you reach another track on the right.

(2) Follow it to the right, climbing uphill, and join a forest road at a hairpin bend.

(3) Go up this road, heading left, and ignore the road on the right, which you will come across again further up.

(4) Take the forest road on the left and continue to the highest point of the hike: signpost. Turn left towards Pré Carré. You will arrive at a stake planted in the field.

(6) Descend the steep slope into the meadow, following the markings visible halfway down, and you will reach a viewpoint with a view of the Causse Quercynois.

(7) Continue downhill, passing a few ruins, then leave the buildings of Artigues on your right. You will reach a crossroads at the edge of the forest.

(8) Take the path on the right, almost opposite. From here, the path becomes less clear: look carefully for the markings, some of which have been erased. However, the route remains fairly obvious.

(9) Ford the stream and head up to the right. A good hundred metres further on, take a short detour to the left to see the Laspugues Cave.

(10) Resume the route on the left and return to the junction at the Vallates Chapel.

(1) Continue straight ahead, retracing your steps in the opposite direction, and return to the car park (S/E).
