The Bourdaous trail from Cazavet

Discover the bourdaous, which are pastoral mountain hamlets, groups of barns and stables used in the past during the summer months. A bourdaou can also be an isolated barn with an adjoining hut, a very basic dwelling for shepherds. This route offers the chance to discover some of them, starting from Cazavet and climbing up to the Cours mountain pasture. The route passes by the summit of Roc de Maléchart, where a 360° view allows you to discover the Pyrenees mountain range.

Description of the walk

The starting point is in the hamlet of Cazaux. Park on the main street. There is no car park in Cazaux.

(S/E) Follow the road south-west and take the bridge over the Rieu on the right. On the other side, follow a path that climbs north-west to a first barn.

(1) Pass under the porch of the house. Contrary to what the maps indicate a little further up, there is no intersection.

(2) At the crossroads, take the path on the right to reach another fork.

(3) Follow the path on the left until you reach another crossroads.

(4) Turn left again to reach a fork towards Le Teil.

(5) Keep left until you reach the white track. Turn right to reach another crossroads.

(6) Turn left to reach the barns of Balagué. There is a table at the entrance to the hamlet. From there, there is a view of the Pyrenees mountain range. Take the path on the left that follows the ridge line.

(7) Cross the hamlet until you reach a crossroads.

(8) Leave the path and turn left.

(9) Once again, follow the path on the right until you reach a Y-shaped fork.

(10) Leave the forest road and turn left. After the buildings, turn right to climb to the summit of Roc Maléchart. You will need to use your hands to climb the last few metres: 360° view.

(11) Take care on the descent back down the same path. Start the long descent to Cazavet on the right. You will reach a junction with the Sentier de la Pisches trail.

(12) Follow it to the right, go around two hairpin bends and arrive at the barrier.

(13) Leave the path and follow the trail on the left until you reach a fork.

(14) Turn right to reach Cazavet.

(15) Once in the village of Cazaux, turn left one last time (Chemin de Loubens) to reach the car park (S/E).

Route taken at the beginning of winter in sunny weather. Despite low temperatures at the start, the entire climb took place in sunshine.
Superb views of the Pyrenees mountain range, first from the hamlet of Sarrat and then from Roc de Maléchart.
The directions on the map were very clear and the signposts on site guided us well, especially when we arrived at the foot of Roc de Maléchart.
