Description of the walk

Departure from Saint-Christophe-la-Grotte, reached from Les Échelles or Chambéry via the Col de Coux. Park in the Pont Romain car park, under a reservoir and near the wash house.

(S/E) Head north and after 50 metres, turn right onto the ramp leading up to the Voie Sarde towards the Grottes des Échelles. It passes in front of the Grotte de la Glacière, then the Monument to Charles-Emmanuel II and goes up the gorge to a crossroads.

(1) Take the ladder on the left over the parapet to climb the Sentier du Beauvoir, a marked trail that quickly rises between the rocks, with sections equipped with handrail cables but without any particular technical difficulty.

The slope then levels out to climb up the edge of the plateau and its sharp limestone pavement. The trail crosses a path, continuing straight ahead, then joins a forest track.

(2) Follow this track on the left for a while. After a flat section, it heads straight north on a steeper slope to the Pré Pollet cross-path (990m).

(3) It is possible to turn right to the ruins of Pré Pollet, then turn left towards Riondet via the Pas des Autrichiens.

After 100m, don't miss the cairn and, above all, the blue markings on the right that indicate the path up to Mont Beauvoir. It first climbs a few switchbacks that rejoin an old path, then approaches the cliff (on the left) and climbs more and more steeply up the slope. Stay on the blue-marked trail for as long as possible, even if the markers are increasingly spaced out.

When the slope levels out as you approach the summit ridge, the markings eventually disappear and there are sometimes multiple paths: the one closest to the cliff (a few metres on the east side) is the most continuous. It leads to a few rocky vantage points, among which two cairns mark the geographical summit (IGN marker on the ground).

(4) Continue along the ridge path towards the north, as the eastern slopes are now steeper. It descends to a small pass and climbs back up towards Le Caut.

You will begin to see the first clearings below on the right. Do not descend immediately, but only near the summit of Le Caut: then descend towards the east, keeping to the left to reach a cleared plateau replanted with young conifers. Cross this plantation to find a forest track which, still keeping to the left, leads to a hunters' hut at the junction with the Saint-Jean-de-Coux forest road.

(5) Head north, then immediately turn left towards the west onto a badly damaged forest track (avoid the ruts) which leads to the Col du Caut.

Descend its western slope via the steep and slippery (when wet) Gardes trail to the Fournet crossroads.

(6) Turn left to descend the stony forest road. It crosses several forest tracks, passes La Sablière and then becomes tarmac. It arrives at the first meadows.

At the top of these meadows (paragliding area), cut across the slope at a water reservoir below the road: if the meadow has been mowed, walk across it, otherwise walk along the edge of the woods and then take the paths through the woods back to the road at the Ferme Riondet lodge.

(7) From the lodge, go down the road for 300 metres and just after a left-hand bend, turn right onto a path to make a circular loop through the woods and descend towards the farms to come out onto a road at Maisons Peylin (790 metres).

(8) Take the road on the left, which climbs slightly to the hamlet of Bande.

Go down the Bande road for 200m and turn left onto a south-facing path, crossing the road and then another road near a car park. The descent continues through meadows (barriers) and then a wooded valley leading to the Belvédère de l'Écolu.

(9) Go up the road on the left and turn right onto a path that descends from the meadows and enters the forest. Follow the marked route, which leaves several paths on the right and reaches the site of the Meulière du Menuet.

(10) Continue downhill (with a few short climbs) through the forest, always keeping to the left when paths branch off to the right. A short climb leads to the Chapelle de la Madeleine chapel.

(11) Continue downhill, pass Col de la Voûte, turn left, then on the slope leave the path that descends to Saint-Christophe to climb back up to the right and resume a moderate descent of the Menuet hill.

The path stays on the ridge, passes the Menuet crossroads and then the Croix des Carriers and arrives at a statue (Sacré-Coeur) in the centre of the old Château des Échelles.

(12) Descend in front of the castle facing south, then take the old stairs to reach the old N6 (Rue des Commandeurs): Caution!

(13) Cross and turn left towards Chambéry for 100 metres. Descend as soon as possible on the right, take the Passage de l'Argenette and then turn right onto the Route des Grottes to arrive at Guiers Vif (alternative route: see practical information).

(14). Follow the "Voie Royales" until you reach your destination.

Notes

Fountain at the start: bring your own water, as there are no further water sources along most of the route.

Much of the circular is marked:
- Yellow markings from (S) to (3) then from Col de Caut to (8)
-GR® 9 from (8) to Le Menuet, then from (13) to (E)
On this last section, there are also specific markings for the Béatrice de Savoie route and the Voie Royale.

Alternative route: to avoid a section of tarmac road, just after (13) you can take the steps on the right and cross a small bridge over the Argenette to reach the Rivier'Alp leisure centre. A shared cycle and footpath leads back to the Voie Royale at Cotterg.
The small road leaves the built-up area. At the junction with the bypass (D520), take the safe passage under the road. The route gradually turns eastwards towards the Échaillon cliffs. At the last junction (cross), turn right or go straight ahead to the left to reach the Pont Romain car park (S/E).

The section between (3) and (5) is off-trail; however, there is a path all along the way, marked with blue dots starting near Pré Pollet, which accompany you all the way up the steep climb. The path then follows the edge of the cliff, staying carefully on its wooded eastern side.

Possiblevariations to shorten the circular:
It is possible to stick to a circular on the marked trail: at (3) turn left and stay on the trail which, via the Passage des Autrichiens, descends directly to Riondet (7). The route is then estimated to take 6 hours, as described on the Beauvoir trail brochure and on the "Sentier-Nature" website.
- After (11) and the Col de la Voûte, it is possible to descend straight down to Saint-Christophe-la-Grotte and return to the starting point via roads crossing the Chef-lieu.

Worth a visit

There are beautiful views from the various open points on the cliff near which the trail passes and from the summit, then from the grassy ridges followed on the descent (Riondet, Écolu, Chapelle, etc.). : views of the Chartreuse (Mont Outheran, Cochette, Lances de Malissard, Grand Som, Petit Som, Grande Sure), Vercors in the distance, Avant-Pays Savoyard and Bugey.

Saint-Christophe offers various sites of interest: the Roman Bridge (Pont Saint-Martin), the Voie Sarde, the caves, including those of Les Échelles, which can be visited...

The Sentier du Beauvoir has been developed (path and cables) and signposted to promote a site that was the subject of significant opposition to a quarry project known as Combe Noire. A brochure describes the interest of the sites along the route.

On the Échelles slope, the route follows part of the Circuit Béatrice de Savoie and the Voie Royale, which are explained in brochures available at the Tourist Office.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Route completed during a trail run. I parked in front of the tourist office in Les Echelles. I followed the route using GPS tracking without any difficulty. A few changes to the route appeared but were no problem. The first climb just after the St Christophe cave is accessible via a small ladder and requires you to be comfortable using your hands and feet. The metal ropes provided are reliable. Overall, a nice route without any major surprises. Worth doing once, but perhaps not again.

The start of the hike with the climb up the Sardinian trail already makes this hike interesting. The uphill crossing of the forest between points 1 and 4 is fortunately shaded. At Mont Beauvoir, the view of the valley is magnificent. The descent is a bit long, especially the paved section. Do not hesitate to follow the alternative route suggested at point 13.

The climb is technical and quite steep. 5km in 2 hours 45 minutes... in the forest, it was very pleasant.
The view from the top is worth the effort!
A very beautiful hike.
Yes, the end of the route isn't great when it's hot, but the rest is very good.
Thank you.

Hello,
The route is "almost" entirely shaded, which was very pleasant on this very hot July day. Some people may find that there is a lot of "forest" with no view, but personally, I like it; you can feel and sense the forest in its intimacy...
You'll get views from the ridges...

This route is dotted with interesting "cultural points".

It's uphill, of course, but we expected worse; it's subjective...

Note: Point 4; near the conifers: in summer, the vegetation (nettles, brambles, etc.) is in full swing; it was a struggle to get through; wearing shorts, our legs were torn to shreds...

We didn't like the last 3 km on tarmac.... Usually, a bit of road is fine, but on that day, with the blazing sun and fatigue, it was agony!

In any case, many thanks for this post, both sporting and cultural!

Hello.
I haven't done this hike yet, but I'll be sure to let you know how it goes once I've done it, because when I transfer the Visorando route onto the IGN map, none of the paths or tracks at the start of the route appear on the map. That's surprising. Unless my map is too old and new paths have been created?

It's steep, muddy and long... especially towards the end, where it's easier to get lost!
But what a beautiful walk.
Provided you're fit enough!
The "difficult" rating is well deserved.

A beautiful, fairly long walk. The first part is very physically demanding until you reach the summit of Mont Beauvoir.
The trail is slippery after heavy rain, so caution is required in certain sections.

I took the shortcut between points 3 and 7.
It is also possible to reach St Christophe without using the ladders, but this involves walking along the road between Le Villard and the starting point of the hike.

A hike that would seem endless if it weren't so varied.

To make it longer, I initially followed a variant route that passed through the picturesque Rivoire plateau.
Contrary to aekpc's comment, I discovered a few viewpoints during the long climb up Mont Beauvoir, three of which were definitely worth the detour:

  • At 600 m (N 45.451111° / E 5.788888°), at a barely visible fork, a trail quickly leads to the right to a beautiful sharp limestone pavement. And at its end, you are treated to a bird's eye view of the Voie Sarde.
  • At 1155m (N 45.471388° / E 5.790277°), a few metres from the blue marked trail, a grassy promontory offers a panorama with views stretching as far as Pilat.
  • The same is true at 1295m (N 45.475277° / E 5.791111°), 200m south of the summit, where the view is even more extensive than before, particularly over the Chartreuse.

The summit itself is not of great interest except to IGN marker enthusiasts.

On the descent, some forestry work is being carried out on the Fournet forest road, but this does not hinder progress. Finally, the discoveries of the Ecolu viewpoint, the Meulière du Menuet and the Madeleine chapel add a significant bonus to this route.

Walking in the shade of the forest on the way up, but... no views.
The interest lies more in the information boards towards the end (leprosarium, millstones, etc.).
The return trip along the road in the sun was quite difficult.
Travel time and elevation gain are reasonable. But my GPS recorded more than 20 km (?).
