Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the town hall in Saint-Pierre-de-Genebroz.

(S/E) Take the stony path behind the town hall, then the road leading up to the Écolu viewpoint.

(1) At the Red Cross, turn right then left. Follow this road towards the viewpoint.

(2) At the viewpoint, take the path (GR®9) behind the picnic tables. Cut across the bend in the road and continue climbing, keeping to the right, along this road.

(3) Walk through the village of Bande. Pass Les Allonnières and arrive at the Riondet farm.

(4) Enjoy the stunning view over the valley. Retrace your steps for about 300m.

(5) At the bend before Les Allonnières, take the small path on the right which leads down into the forest. Join a track, turn left onto it, then rejoin the road at the entrance to the village of Bande.

(3) Head down the road. Take the bend to the left, then the hairpin bend to the right. Pass in front of the Relais de l’Écureuil (restaurant).

(6) Just before the Écolu viewpoint, take theGR® to the left (yellow sign). Follow the red and white or yellow markings through the forest. Take a look at the Meulière du Menuet (an old quarry for millstones).

(7) At this crossroads, turn left and follow the path (yellow signs) to the Chapelle de la Madeleine, a former leper colony. Panoramic views over the valley and the Chartreuse mountains.

(8) Retrace your steps to the previous crossroads.

(7) Head towards "Saint-Pierre-de-Genebroz" on the left (yellow sign). Walk down through the woods to the meadows.

(9) Take the road (D131) on the right which leads up to the church and then the town hall (S/E).

Beautiful views but the hike has a bit too much tarmac, and should be done in reverse to avoid the climb at the end of the route.
Best avoided in summer when the sun is at its strongest.

A very good description of the route; we only managed half of it as we only had a few hours.
Stunning views over the Echelles Valley.

I’d recommend doing it the other way round. It’s more enjoyable to head up through the woods, along a gentle, shaded path, and then come back down the road in full sun. It’s not difficult at all, with lovely views – I’d say there’s only a 450-metre climb.

Hello hikers,
The description is accurate, although at point (6) the red and white or yellow markings are not visible for quite a while in the forest. In fact, you follow a path without markings, so at one point remember to turn left until you finally find those red and white markings.
Mild weather, dry and cold, with a damp section at point (7).
Thank you to the Visiorando association.
