Fay Circular Route

A traditional walk for the residents of Criel, in summer it offered a cool respite under the canopy of beech trees that shaded much of the route. Unfortunately, recent clear-cutting and the passage of modern forestry machinery have damaged the little path through the woods.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the former Criel school.

(S/E) With your back to the school, head left towards Rives. Pass a dead-end on the left, then turn left at the next junction to follow Chemin de la Sure. Continue for 200 m until you reach an EDF transformer.

(1) Turn right onto Chemin des Écureuils: enjoy a 360° panorama of the Vercors and Chartreuse mountains. After the houses, the path descends steeply for about 400 m.

(2) Before reaching the right-hand bend, turn left up the hillside onto Chemin du Fay, which overlooks the Allivet site, then the cutlery factories, before coming out onto a tarmac road at a hairpin bend.

(3) Follow the road down to the right for about 300 m.

(4) Turn left onto the Sentier de la Roche. The Chemin de la Roche is one of the paths (along with the Chemin des Écureuils) used by the inhabitants of Criel to reach the factories at the bottom of the valley, where the water power was located. Forges, sawmills, weaving mills and paper mills provided a livelihood for hundreds of people from Criel and the village of Renage for several centuries.

(5) At the end of the Sentier de la Roche, head up to the right onto Rue Alexandre Raphaël. Once at the end of the street, turn left, pass an old bread oven and arrive at the old school in Criel (S/E).
