Small bee and large bee at Renage

To the Trees, Citizens! A lovely walk through the woodland, heading towards the Criel plateau. Along the route, you’ll find all the common tree species and the Criel walnut groves. From the ridges, there’s a panoramic view of the peaks of the Vercors and the Chartreuse.
On the way back, a permanent exhibition of photographs in the woodland illustrates the Chemin du Sophora. The return route then takes you through the Parc de l’Ancienne Soierie and its remarkable trees, then past the Lavoir des Amours, where weavers used to wash their linen and, perhaps, meet their soulmate.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Renage church.

(S/E) Walk between the church apse and the cemetery. At the corner of the cemetery, turn left and cross the town hall car park. Then turn right and cross the multi-purpose hall car park. You will come out onto Boulevard Docteur Valois, opposite No. 140. Turn left, cross Rue Michel Créminési, then turn left onto Impasse La Charrière. When the boulevard turns right, continue straight on along Chemin Montessuy.

(1) At the fork, take the path on the left and head downhill. Cross Route de Criel and take the Pont de la Guillonnière bridge over the Fure. On the other side, a flight of steps on the left allows you to cut across a bend in the road and reach the start of the Sentier de la Roche.

(2) Take the Sentier de la Roche, which heads south-east (wet and slippery sections when it has rained). Climb up and, at the fork (not shown on the 1:25,000 map), keep left (ignore the Chemin du Crocodile on the right). Continue climbing until you rejoin the Route de Criel.

(3) Follow the road to the right for about 500 m.

(4) Immediately after a walnut grove and just before house no. 125, turn right onto the Chemin des Allières. After about 500 m, the path turns left and leads to a crossroads.

(5) Turn left towards the large bee (total distance 7.7 km). You’ll come out onto a road; follow it for about 20 metres and, when it turns left, continue straight on along a dirt track until the next junction.

(6) Facing the walnut grove, take the well-marked path on the right, running alongside the irrigation system for the grove. Walk for a long time in a south-south-westerly direction, ignoring any side paths. Pass under two high-voltage power lines and continue to a clear gap in the vegetation where a gas pipeline passes through (marked by yellow A-frame signs),

(7) Then turn left and head uphill. At the T-junction that appears shortly afterwards (view of the Vercors), turn left. Pass under the high-voltage power lines again (views of the Vercors and the Chartreuse). Walk north-northeast, ignoring the side paths. You will come out onto a small road; follow it to the left for about a hundred metres.

(8) At the four-way junction (cross; views of the Grésivaudan, the Vercors and the Chartreuse), turn left and after about 250 m, take the first path on the left at the corner of a house. Follow it to the next junction, which you passed earlier.

(6) Head diagonally to the right, rejoin the small road, follow it as it continues and, when it turns left, carry straight on along a tarmac path.

(5) Turn left.

(9) As you come out of the bend on the left of the track, take the descending path on the right. After about 300 m, you will reach the end of the Chemin du Séphora photo exhibition.

(10) Turn right (north) and follow the path and its exhibition of around twenty photos.

(11) At the junction (not shown on the 1:25,000 map), ignore the Chemin du Crocodile on the right and turn left. Pass the Chapelle de la Grande Fabrique on your right and take a footbridge over an old canal that carried water from the Fure to a waterwheel which, in its day, powered several dozen looms. Cross the bridge over the Fure.

(12) Turn left, then take a hairpin bend to the right. Go round a gate and immediately take an uphill path on the left. Cross a road and continue along the path. Cross another road at a hairpin bend to the left and continue up the steep tarmac slope opposite.

(1) At the junction you passed at the start of the walk, turn left. Return to Boulevard du Docteur Valois and follow it as it continues. Go straight on until you reach the community hall. Then turn right to cross its car park, then left to cross the town hall car park. Then go round the church to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

(5) Two possible circular loops (4.4 or 7.7 km):
For the shorter option, turn right for a direct return via La Petite Abeille (total distance 4.4 km). Please refer to (9) in the description.

As several descents may be muddy, the use of walking poles is recommended.

Hiking on our trails is an outdoor activity and involves some risks: you may slip and fall, be in the path of a mountain bike or a falling branch… Please be careful.

Warning: global warming is affecting the vegetation. Trees are weakened and may uproot unexpectedly: do not venture into the undergrowth in windy or stormy weather. Walking with poles is recommended. Keep an eye on your children and stay on the path.

Worth a visit

On the Grande Abeille, the power lines offer interesting views of the Vercors, the Chartreuse and the Isère valley.

It's cool along the river on the left bank (going downstream) with a path being finished downstream (dense vegetation prevents passage). Signs brighten up the walk. We climbed the hill for a loop. Refreshments and return. No major difficulties.

A lovely walk,

But be careful: part of the route is blocked by trees across the path, just past the photo exhibition. A landowner has closed off the access that used to lead down to the Fure. A bypass path has been created on the left, just before the trees blocking the path. This path climbs towards the Criel plateau and ends at a road, which you should follow to the left, as according to the town hall this bypass is not yet complete, and the route has been shortened; you can therefore no longer access the picnic area made up of cable reels in the undergrowth. It is, however, still possible to reach the ridge and back via the path that runs beneath the high-voltage power lines.

A lovely walk. I think it would be useful to provide two separate route descriptions for the ‘big’ and ‘small’ routes, as you really do need to follow the detailed instructions to make it to the end of the walk. The fact that the two routes overlap can lead to confusion… which is, of course, exactly what happened to us. But thank you again for the detailed description provided by the author of this walk.

An interesting route that’s close to built-up areas yet still feels like the countryside.
