Circular route from the Étang d'Hasselfurth via the Col du Hochkopf

A pleasant little circular walk from the VVF holiday centre at Étang d'Hasselfurth towards Étang d'Entenbaechel, then looping back via the Widerschall and Hochkopf passes.
The paths are very well maintained, easily walkable, with little elevation gain apart from the section between the two passes leading to the summit of the Hochkopf.

Description of the walk

Access to the Étang d'Hasselfurth is made easier by the nearby holiday facilities. Use one of the available car parks as your starting point.

(S/E) From the car park, go to the left of the inn to reach the beach and then follow the shore to the right; this is more scenic than going via the car parks.
Follow the Red Disc markings. The walk continues all the way along the lake and then straight on into the forest (the river shown on the map is not visible from the path). At the bridge, continue straight on and turn right to reach a picnic area.

(1) Continue due south to the Étang d’Entenbaechel, which is unfortunately not very accessible. Leave it on your left and carry on to the next junction of marked paths.

(2) Turn left towards the Col de Hochkopf; after a few dozen metres, cross another junction of marked paths. Leave the path on your right. On your left, a path slopes upwards to the right. Take this path marked with a Yellow Triangle. Continue straight on to the Col de Widerschall.

(3) At the Col de Widerschall, there are quite a few options available to you. The one we suggest here is to continue north-east, towards the Col de Hochkopf at an altitude of 429 m (marked with a Green Saltire).

(4) A short climb to reach the heights, but with little to see. Descend, keeping your bearings on a steep rocky slope, until you reach a crossroads with a wide track.

(5) Leave the Green Saltire markings and turn left, following the Red Cross markings towards Étang d’Hasselfurth. Ignore the paths branching off to the right or left until you reach another junction with several paths.

(6) There are several options:

1) Continue in the same direction (3rd path from the left) along the Sentier de Découverte; this leads straight to the pond and then to the car park (S/E).

2) The route chosen for the return journey (shown on the map and in the description) takes thesecond path from the left (marked with a Red Cross). After about 400 m, at the junction, you have another choice.

(7) Option 1: Turn left, cross the footbridge and rejoin the path taken on the way out.

(1). Take this to return along the western bank of the pond to the car park (S/E).

Option 2: Continue straight ahead to return via the eastern shore (the option shown on the map). This route takes you past a picnic area.

(8) Make the most of this well-equipped spot before returning to the small beach by the pond and the car park (S/E).

I was looking for a route for a run, so I chose this one, which, without you realising it, has quite a bit of elevation gain. To make up the distance, I continued the circular route towards the A-road, running in the direction of traffic. In the end, I covered 10.5km.

The route is very well described. The signposts are very well placed and there are plenty of opportunities to stop along the way. The walk lacks a few scenic viewpoints, but this is clearly stated in the route description. The refreshment stop at the finish line is a great way for everyone to recharge their batteries. Thank you.

A pleasant little walk, just as the description says.

However, the paths are well signposted but not necessarily with colour-coded markings painted on trees or rocks.
Furthermore, as there are several options available, it is best to take a map and/or the app with you.
