The citadel of Bitche and its rampart walk

The first climb is steep and tiring, but once at the top, you can admire the whole of Bitche from the rampart walk at the foot of the Citadel walls.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the Jardin pour la Paix car park.

N.B.1. To avoid the first part of the climb to the Citadel, you can also park higher up, in the Citadel car park.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, follow Rue Bombelle to the right. This first part of the climb is very steep, on an old cobbled road lined with sandstone walls and passing under arches.

(1) At the citadel car park, turn right at Take a sharp right. Climb the steep cobbled road up to the entrance to the monument.

(2) After passing through the arch before the drawbridge (which marks the paid entrance to the monument), the rampart walk starts on the right. Walk around the citadel in an anti-clockwise direction.

N.B.2. Almost the entire length of the rampart walk is divided between a wide, gravel path below and a narrower path at the top of the embankment. To enjoy the panoramic view of the entire town, it is advisable to stay on the upper path if you can.

N.B.3. Depending on the season, you may have to pass through a gate (spring-loaded) to prevent sheep from grazing on the surrounding lawns.

(2) Back at the entrance to the monument, walk down the paved road to the citadel car park.

(1) Turn left and walk back down to the car park where you started (S/E).

Worth a visit

To start with: visit the Jardin pour la Paix (entrance fee applies), a beautiful garden with entertainment and activities for children.

At the citadel: a visit to the monument is a must! Underground passages, video projections, a true cultural and historical immersion.

Historical note:

The citadel of Bitche stands on the site of ancient fortifications dating back to the 13th century. The complex was taken over by Vauban in 1679. During the Franco-Prussian War, the citadel was besieged from 8 August 1870 to 26 March 1871. Militarily undefeated, the commander of the fortress, Louis-Casimir Teyssier, refused several orders to surrender because he did not believe that France could be defeated. It was only when a French plenipotentiary came to deliver an order from Gambetta's government in person that he surrendered the citadel to the Germans. The garrison marched out with their weapons, baggage and music in front of the German troops, signifying that they had never surrendered. The Germans proposed that the town of Bitche be given the same status as Belfort, but this was ultimately refused.

This feat of arms earned the town of Bitche the Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1919 (!), and its name is inscribed in gold letters in the Pantheon. It lives up to its coat of arms, a two-headed snake, and its welcoming motto, "I bite from behind as well as from the front".
