Circular Saint-Lubin-de-Cravant in the footsteps of a "Fauve"

These circulars will not take you into the bush in search of large predators, but along good paths through woods and fields on the outskirts of the Perche, in this transitional region known as the Thimerais. You will pass through the landscapes that inspired the painter Maurice de Vlaminck, who founded Fauvism at the beginning of the 20th century with his friends Derain and Matisse.
Having settled in La Tourillère, near Rueil-la-Gadelière, 100 years ago, the artist fell in love with this region, which he tirelessly explored until his death in 1958 in search of places of inspiration.
These circular loops take you through the landscapes "where the wind bends the trees and chases the clouds across a dark sky" that captivated the painter.
This route starts in Saint-Lubin de Cravant, where the church inspired the painter. It follows the Meuvette valley, which was once canalised. The Avre Aqueduct crosses the valley on imposing arches. It supplies Paris with drinking water.

Description of the walk

Saint-Lubin-de-Cravant is 5 km north of Brezolles via the D30, then the D314.1. Parking is available near the wash house opposite 1, Rue du Moulin.

No signposts

(S/E) With your back to the wash house, turn right, walk past the tiny town hall and follow the D314 up into the woods until you reach the edge of the village.

(1) Turn left onto the first gravel path that climbs to the edge of a wood and arrives at a fork in the road.

(2) Turn left, cross a small wood, walk along the edge of a second wood and reach a crossroads between a large oak tree on the left and the edge of a wood on the right.

(3) Continue straight ahead and join a path coming diagonally from the right.

(4) Take the path on the left. Descend towards the valley , where you will soon see the Avre Aqueduct passing over arches. After crossing the aqueduct, continue downhill until you reach the Meuvette ford. You can take a shortcut by crossing it and following the path on the left.

(5) From the ford, continue along the same path, which turns right and approaches some farm buildings. You will arrive at a new ford equipped with a footbridge.

(6) Take this footbridge to cross the Meuvette and continue along the path that climbs towards Les Rouets until you reach a fork.

(7) Turn left and continue along the path that climbs alongside the Bois de la Cavée and leads to the D314.3.

(8) Turn left, follow the road for about 300 metres, then turn left onto the first path that descends and crosses the Bois de la Cavée. Reach the first ford on the other side of the river.

(5) Turn right, pass under the arches and continue straight ahead along the valley to the T-junction with a path near a magnificent oak tree.

(9) Turn left and arrive at Revercourt. Take the D138 on the left to pass in front of the town hall and the church in the cemetery. Arrive at the crossroads at the exit of the village.

(10) Go down to the left to the ford where there is an old brick footbridge. Do not cross, but turn right onto the path that follows the river. Continue along this path, which climbs up and joins the D138.

(11) Continue left on this road until you reach the entrance to the village. Pass in front of the church on Rue de la Garenne. You can turn left down the alley to see the chevet of the church. At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue des Marnières, cross the bridge and you will reach the wash house (S/E).
