Description of the walk

Departure from Acon Church. Small shaded car park on the north side of the church (immediately on the right when coming from the N12). Two hikes are marked at this point: here, we will follow the "Avre et Meuvette" hike.

Yellow markings

(S/E) From the church, take Rue des Sheep Pastures towards Les Brulés d'Acon (sign). Cross the small bridges over the streams, note the wash house on the right and cross the Avre on the Pont des Planches.

(1) Leave the road when it turns right and take a path on the left that starts in the undergrowth with a fence on the left-hand side. Walk along the river on your left (at a distance) and then along a property.

(2) At Heudez, follow the small road on the right. At the start of a hairpin bend on the right, leave the road and turn left onto a path at the edge of the woods on the right. Ignoring vague paths on the right, walk along the left-hand side of a field, then a hedge and a meadow. You will come to a small road; follow it to the left and enter the hamlet of Islou.

Yellow + red and white markings

(3) At the crossroads, turn right onto the D313-11 towards Saint-Lubin. Cross the Meuvette and, at the next fork, turn left and continue on the D313-11 towards Saint-Lubin. In the hamlet of La Bouverie, at a wooden gate on the left, two arrows on the right-hand side of the road indicate a right turn: do not take the first sharp right-hand path (which seems the most obvious), but continue a few metres further on and take a discreet path that climbs steeply into the undergrowth. After a sharp right turn, you will come out onto a wider path near Le Plessis (sign opposite on the right).

(4) Then follow theGR®22to the left towards Paris (sign) and walk along the edge of the woods on your left. Begin a descent along the wall of a property on your left. At the three-way junction that quickly appears, continue left downhill for a few metres. At another fork, take the path on the right that goes up along a fence on the left. At the first houses, you will see the bell tower of Dampierre church.

(5) Facing the church porch, turn left onto a downhill street. At No. 2, turn sharply left and descend onto a path through the woods. At the bottom, cross a small road and take the footbridge opposite to cross the Avre. Continue north under cover and then between fenced meadows. Cross a small footbridge and you will come to a crossroads.

Yellow markings

(6) Leave theGR®22trail on your right and follow a path on your left (west-southwest) that starts with a hedge on the left-hand side and then goes between fields.

(7) At an isolated house, you will come to a small road. Follow it to the left, alongside a stream on the left-hand side.

Yellow + red and white markings

(8) At the fork, turn right onto Chemin du Mesnil. Pass several houses and note two beautiful weeping willows on the left. When the road turns right, continue straight ahead on the shaded path, which is closed to motor vehicles. Walk through the undergrowth with the Avre visible some distance away on the left. Stay on the main path, ignoring one or two vague turnings on the right. Pass the entrance to a property on your left and come out onto a small road.

(9) Cross the road and take a stabilised path with a property wall on your right, with the bell tower of Acon clearly visible. Then walk between two walls and you will soon reach the church of Acon (S/E).

Notes

The hike follows well-maintained paths or small roads with little traffic: wear hiking boots or good trainers.

There are no drinking water sources along the route. There are no shops.

Signposting is sparse but clearly visible at intersections. A 1:25,000 map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Additional options:
This hike can be combined with the hike "Along the Avre and in the Bois des Brouillets", which has the same starting and finishing points. Start with the second walk to its point (9), the Pont des Planches. Then continue with this walk from its point (1) to the church in Acon. Allow around 17.5km and 5 to 6 hours for the whole walk.

Hike completed by the author on 25 August 2016.

A lovely walk in the Avre valley. It feels like you're far away from everything. Worth doing again in spring.

A very pleasant route, no problems with navigation.

Between 5 and 6, a small section of the path is flooded, but there's nothing to stop you from passing through. Just stay on the left-hand side and you'll be fine, for now, because you'll need to think about cutting back the brambles, which may become a problem at some point.

Thanks, Netra
Best regards

Superb hike - Bucolic setting
Charming chapel, pretty houses, small villages and large grassy areas crossed by streams and rivers, forests.
A very nice discovery
The halfway point along the schoolchildren's path was a bit challenging as it was completely flooded, with the stream having invaded the path.
A hike to be recommended without hesitation.

Superb hike under bright sunshine despite the cold, well-marked route, a slight uncertainty upon arriving in Dampierre but no serious consequences.
The open-air wash house is absolutely beautiful. A very easy hike with varied landscapes and beautiful houses along the way.

Good route, some nice information boards about the flora and fauna, but lots of water... a small section of the path has turned into a river, but you can get through by walking along the "banks"!!! And some worrying gunshots in the woods on the way back to the church.

A pleasant walk, even in the mist, which creates a special atmosphere along the section that runs alongside the river. Accessible to all (just one short climb), with a few detours that allow you to see typical houses.
