Circular starting from Bonnemain via La Perinne and Les Ormes.

Bonnemain is one of the twenty-six communes in the canton of Combourg (also known as Romantic Brittany). This walk complements the one to the north-east, which runs between the village and the Domaine des Ormes. It winds its way through the countryside, via sunken paths and a few pretty little houses.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in front of the church.

Yellow markings

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the D9 towards Lanhélin le Tronchet until you reach the intersection with Rue de la Futaie.

(1) Turn right, then continue along the path that follows it. Pass through the undergrowth and come out onto a road. Turn right towards La Perrine and continue straight on until you reach the crossroads.

(2) Keep to the right, passing the water treatment plant on your right. When you reach the cemetery, walk along its northern edge and take a small path lined with fences on both sides. At the end of the path, cross the road and follow it to the left until you reach Rue de la Duchesse Anne.

(3) The street is winding. At the first bend, follow it to the left, then at the second bend, to the right. At the end, take the dirt track opposite, which leads to a wayside cross under a tree.

(4) Pass on the left to reach a crossroads a few dozen metres away, and take the street on the left. Keep to the right until you reach the D9.

(5) Turn left towards the railway line and cross it at the level crossing. Continue to the next path on the left to reach the Étang de la Sablonniére car park. Enter the site, pass close to the hut and reach the edge of the pond. Follow it on the right. You will reach a stream.

(6) Walk along the path on the right-hand side, follow it when it turns right, and walk past the old snail farm. Pass the old mill below, continue to the hamlet of La Chaise, and cross it, keeping to the left. Continue along the path that leads into the undergrowth to reach the hamlet of La Praie. Turn right onto the road and you will soon reach a crossroads by a well.

End of the yellow markings.

(7) Take the path on the left and follow it for about 170 metres. At the next intersection, turn left to reach the hamlet of La Clouyère. At the road, turn left and follow it to the wayside cross at the hamlet of La Ville Blanche.

(8) Here you have two options:
- continue along the road if the path on the left is muddy, which will take you directly to the hamlet of La Haute Barbotaie,
take the path on the left, which is marked on the map, and follow a wide circular route to reach the road, then turn left and continue to the hamlet of Haute Barbotaie.

(9) Leave the road on the right and continue along the path that follows it. Pass a wayside cross, then a small pond. Continue until you reach the D795.

(10) Cross it carefully, then first turn right then left to enter the Domaine des Ormes. After 300 m, at the entrance to the estate, take the path on the right. Follow it for about 1 km, passing a riding centre on your left. Reach the hamlet of Les Rieux to take the road on the left and rejoin the D975.

(11) Take it on the left, then cross it carefully a few metres further on to enter the car park. Find a sign in the middle of the car park. Turn right, walk along a small pond and rejoin the road at Hameau de la Ville Hodia.

(12) Continue along this road and, following a straight line, reach the crossroads with the well that you passed on the way there.

(7) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction until you reach the small stream.

(6) Turn right to go around the pond, in the opposite direction to the outward journey. Join the road, turn left, cross the railway line at the level crossing and return to the D9 crossroads, which you also passed on the way out.

(5) Keep going straight ahead on Rue Bertrand du Guesclin, pass the primary school, and you will come to the car park of Bonnemain Church (S/E).

Worth a visit

Between (2) and La Ferme de la Perinne
(6) The Moulin de la Chaise, dating from the 16th century, is one of the oldest watermills still visible in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine. It has been converted into a dwelling.

The commune has many crosses. Along the way, you can see the Croix de La Ville Blanche (a granite wayside cross belonging to the Juhel-Delaunay family, with an inlaid statue niche) and the Croix de La Haute Barbotais (dated 1541), which is the oldest in the commune.
