Somewhere between a hike and a stroll, given its distance, this route offers a wealth of panoramic views over the Cassis and La Ciotat areas and the sea with its coves. It starts on a hiking trail, then follows a partly tarmac-surfaced path until reaching the viewpoint just past the transmission mast. There is no option for a circular route.

Description of the walk

Access to the car park is by car via the Route des Crêtes

(S/E) With the road on your right, go through the forest gate. Take a very pretty path marked in yellow. After about 250 m, turn right and arrive at the Baume Noire or Grotte des Espagnols, which is now known as the Grotte des Chauves-Souris.

(1) Continue along this main path downhill until you reach a tarmac road.

(2) Head down the road to the left. After two bends, you’ll reach the large clearing at Pas de la Colle, with a white forest barrier. Follow the tarmac road (D141a) straight ahead, climbing until you reach the Bau de la Saoupe transmission mast: red and white markings. At the forest barrier, just before the mast, follow the small path to the right for about a hundred metres to enjoysome truly unobstructed views.

(3) Return to the gate via the same path and retrace your steps along the outward route to get back to the car park (S/E).

A hike in two distinct parts, each requiring a different level of effort. The first involves crossing the Falaises Soubeyranes, France’s highest sea cliffs. There are numerous exceptional viewpoints, though they are unsecured and therefore require caution. The second section passes through the Grande Tête, the Dent du Loup and the Bau Rous, in a wilder environment with far fewer visitors. A long stretch without signposting, along little-used paths, will require careful attention to avoid missing the various, sometimes tricky, changes of direction. However, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of La Ciotat Bay and its iconic rock, the famous Bec de l’Aigle. GPS strongly recommended!
