Fionay - Cabane de Louvie
First stage of the trek linking the village of Fionay to Saas Fee. A pleasant stage to reach the Cabane de Louvie, built on the edge of the lake of the same name.
Trek from Fionay to Saas-Fee
In the Swiss valley, this particularly pleasant hike allows you to explore the many 4000 m peaks that surround the route.
N.B. this route is outlined on Openmap which doesn't have the details of our fine IGN maps. Before being able to get your hands on a Swiss map, which are more precise, the route and GPS layouts will be handy for this pleasant trek.
Panossière Hut - Chanrion Hut
This is a fairly long stage but set against a magnificent backdrop. The Mauvoisin dam is impressive, as are all the waterfalls along the right bank of the lake. The route passes through the easy and beautiful Tsofeiret Pass.
Louvie Hut - Prafleuri Hut
This sixth stage takes place in the high mountains and, depending on the season, may involve crossing snowfields. From Lake Louvie, climb up to Col Termin and rejoin the balcony path that comes from the Montfort Hut. Continue to Col de Louvie (possibility of snowfields). After descending Col de Louvie, the path passes at the foot of the Grand Désert Glacier. The trail then crosses scree; look out for the red and white markings and follow the signs for Prafleuri. Climb Col de Prafleuri. Descend to Torrent de Prafleuri (small bridge); on the left, a trail leads to the Prafleuri Hut.
Louvie Hut - Prafleuri Hut
The second stage of the route involves crossing two passes, the Louvie and the Prafleuri, both of which were snow-covered.
Brunet Hut - Louvie Hut
This fifth stage crosses the Val de Bagnes. To the right of the Cabane Brunet, follow the path that descends directly to Fionnay. Be careful, this very steep path with countless tree roots can be slippery and dangerous in wet weather. Cross the road that leads to Fionnay. The path to the Louvie Hut is signposted in the centre of the village, on the right bank of the torrent. The trail is well marked all the way to the hut. Ibex often come close to the hut. A little further on, it is possible to see chamois.
Brunet Hut - Panossière Hut
The route passes through the Col des Avouillons before descending to the rest of the Corbassière glacier, which is crossed via a spectacular 200 m long footbridge over a 70 m drop. The high mountains reveal themselves after the pass in a grandiose setting.
Cabane des Dix - Arolla
This eighth stage takes place in high mountains and, depending on the season, may involve crossing snowfields. From the Cabane des Dix, return to the Pas de Chèvres / Col de Riedmaten junction. Return to the Pas de Chèvres after a long passage through scree and large boulders. Ladders provide access to the Pas des Chèvres. The descent to Arolla follows a good path. Views of Mont Collon and Pigne d'Arolla.Pas de Chèvres or Col de Riedmaten? See the "Practical information" section.
Prafleuri hut - La Sage lodge
Today's stage is unusual: it starts with a descent before a long climb, a second descent and a chairlift transfer, followed by a flat walk and a bus ride to the lodge.
Cabane de Prafleuri - Cabane des Dix
This seventh stage takes place in high mountains and, depending on the season, may involve crossing snowfields. From the Prafleuri hut, head towards the Col des Roux, then descend to Lac des Dix. Walk along the lake to the south-eastern end, where you will find signs for the Cabane des Dix. The path follows the glacier moraine and then goes around Tête Noire to reach the Cabane des Dix. Views of Mont Blanc de Cheilon, La Ruinette and Pigne d'Arolla.
Cabane de Chanrion - Crête Sèche refuge
This description differs from the classic Combins tour. This route is not recommended in bad weather. It offers an alternative off the beaten track via the Refuge de Crête Seiche. The atmosphere is alpine, requiring a good level of experience on stony paths and snowfields. The distance may seem short and the elevation gain low, but it is a difficult stage.
Cabane de Mille - Cabane Brunet
This stage was shortened due to bad weather. The plan was to go via Mont Rogneux. This is a short stage that allows you to avoid Mont Rogneux when it is in thick fog. However, if the weather improves in the afternoon, it is possible to climb from the Cabane Brunet to the Goli des Otanes. You will then walk alongside pastures where Herens cows graze.
Cabane de Mille - FXB Panossière hut
Between Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa, the Grand Combin stands out from everywhere. Forming the border between Switzerland and Italy, and the boundary between the Grand Saint-Bernard valley and the Val de Bagne, it rises to 4,314 m. The tour takes seven days; I added an extra day to visit the Fenêtres lakes, the icing on the cake. Each stage offers alpine accommodation.
Arolla - Prarayer Refuge
Today's high mountain stage requires the use of crampons to cross the Arolla glacier. This long stage requires an early start.
Arolla - La Sage
This ninth stage is more relaxing than the previous ones. Many hikers skip this section by taking a bus transfer from Arolla to La Sage or Villa. Although short and easy, this stage really has its place in the route. The trail passes by Lac Bleu and crosses the beautiful hamlet of La Gouille, typical of the Val d'Hérens, then the villages of Les Haudères and La Sage. From La Gouille to Les Haudères, the trail follows the "La Borgne d'Arolla" torrent. In the centre of Les Haudères, a sign indicates the path that climbs up to the village of La Sage.
From the Great Saint Bernard Pass to the Simplon Pass
How to connect two legendary mountain passes between Italy and Switzerland! Most of the proposed route is in Italy (from the Great Saint Bernard Pass to the Monte Moro Pass), with the last two stages in Switzerland following the traditional "Chamonix-Zermatt-Simplon" route.
Bourg-Saint-Pierre - Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses
Departure from Bourg-Saint-Pierre, the last village before the Great Saint Bernard Pass. This first stage follows exclusively the TDC trail.
Hike with a brief description, to be followed using the Visorando app.
Liddes - Cabane Brunet
This fourth stage offers various views of the Combin massif. At the top of the village, head towards the Col and Cabane de Mille. After a pleasant walk through the forest, the path gradually opens up to reach Erra. The terrace of the Cabane de Mille offers a magnificent panorama of the Mont Blanc range, the Aiguilles de Chamonix and the Combin massif. At Servay (a small sheepfold after a small lake), head towards Cabane Brunet. The end of the route crosses a rather chaotic area before taking the small road that climbs up to Cabane Brunet. Superb view of the Combin mountains just behind the hut.
Liddes - Cabane de Mille
For this second stage, take the bus from the Grand Saint-Bernard Pass Hospice to the village of Liddes. Depart from Liddes and walk through large forest areas and flower-filled mountain pastures to reach the Cabane du Col de Mille.
The Cabane du Vélan from Bourg-Saint-Pierre
The Cabane du Vélan (2,642 m) is nothing like a traditional Swiss hut. Its bold, futuristic architecture, adorned with solar panels (inaugurated in 1993), makes it look more like a ship than a refuge and has earned it the Ligue de Protection du Patrimoine award. It enjoys an exceptional location above moraines and glaciers, with magnificent views of the Grand Combin massif (4,312 m) and Mont Vélan (3,727 m).
At the foot of the Grand Combin
Two-day circuit with a night in a mountain hut and exploration of the Combe de Valsorey, at the foot of the Grand Combin (4,312 m) and Mont Vélan (3,727 m).
Spectacular high mountain scenery guaranteed.
Six Blanc mountain, Mont Brûlé and Col de Mille
A challenging loop with alternating gentle climbs and easy descents, offering magnificent views of the Val de Bagne on one side and Orsières on the other. There are also numerous views of the French and Swiss Alps in good weather.
From the Cabane du Vélan to Bourg-Saint-Pierre
The second stage of this hike starts at the Cabane du Vélan and follows the right bank of the Valsorey torrent.
Plan Monnay
A lovely circular walk for a half day out which is good if the weather is forecast to deteriorate in the afternoon. It can also be extended if you want a longer walk. Amazing views from the top of Plan Monnay.
Crête Sèche Refuge - Ollomont
This last stage takes place in an alpine setting. It justifies the choice of this alternative to the classic Tour des Combins. Unfortunately, the consequences of climate change are evident. The glaciers mentioned on the map no longer exist. Only rock piles remain. From the Col du Mont Gelé, the highest point of this trek, you must pay close attention to the path marked by cairns to follow on the descent. The position of these cairns is sometimes erratic. The end of this stage ends with a long and very steep descent, which can be avoided by staying on the pastoral road.
La Tzoumaz - Nendaz
The elevation profile says it all about this day. Most of the route runs along the Grand Bisse de Saxon. This section has been beautifully restored. In Taillay, you will discover a water wheel and a hammer powered by the stream. This ingenious invention was an alarm signal. The sound of the hammer could be heard 2 km away. The absence of sound alerted the bisse guard. You will recognise the Muverans massif on the other side of the Rhône valley.
Lodge de la Sage - Bella Tola Hut
Long climb up the Col de Torrent before reaching Lac de Moiry, then Saint-Luc by bus, Tignousa by funicular railway and finally Bella Tola on foot.
Remember to adjust the distance using the information provided by the points (6) and (7): you need to subtract 10 km.
Dzovennoz - Prarayer mountain hut
Markings: sentieri N°1, N°2 then N°3. Aerial route from Alpe de la Tsa to Combe de Grand Chamin (equipped passages).
Hike with a brief description, to be followed with the Visorando app.
Tour of the Matterhorn
This 10-day tour of the Matterhorn is remarkable. It allows you to walk alongside the 4,000-metre peaks of this Alpine range every day. Located in two countries, Italy and Switzerland, it also allows you to familiarise yourself with three European languages: Italian, German and French in the Valais region of Switzerland.
Important note: Two stages of this route take place partly on glaciers. It is highly advisable to bring crampons and a rope for maximum safety. Crampons will make it easier to walk, and the rope can be used to form a rope team to secure the participants.
La Léchère - Prarayer Refuge
A warm-up walk along the right bank of the lake to reach the Prarayer refuge.
Three passes and lakes from the Great St Bernard Pass
A magnificent loop of the Great Saint Bernard region between Switzerland and Italy, from the Ferret Window to the Col des Chevaux, via the Col du Bastillon and the lakes of Fenêtre, Petit Lé and Grand Lé.
Fenêtre de Ferret from the Grand Saint-Bernard Hospice
A high-altitude hike between Switzerland and Italy, the climb to the Fenêtre de Ferret from the Grand-Saint-Bernard Hospice offers a real immersion in the wild, rocky atmosphere of the Valais Alps.
The trail starts in the mystical atmosphere of the Hospice, at 2,469 m, between high-altitude lakes, cairns and pastures where the tinkling of bells can sometimes be heard. Very quickly, you rise into a majestic alpine setting, surrounded by rocks, silence... and sometimes a little company: the route is relatively busy in high season.
The climb to the Fenêtre de Ferret (2,698 m, very well marked) takes place in a grandiose setting, with unobstructed views of Mont Dolent, Grand Golliat, and the hanging glaciers of the Italian Val Ferret. Once at the pass, the reward is complete: the panorama opens up to 360°, embracing the Swiss and Italian valleys. The contrast between the northern and southern slopes of the Alps is striking.
Lacs de Fenêtre
A superb circular walk crossing three cols and the border into Italy and back. There are amazing and changing views throughout. Recently upgraded with signage as a locally important route and marked as 210 on the Swiss side of the border, 103 or 13a on the Italian side.
Described here in a clockwise direction as the Col du Bastillon is better in ascent than descent.
Loop of the window lakes from the Grand Saint Bernard
Hike between Italy and Switzerland, several lakes (Ferret Lakes in the Swiss valley of La Fouly) to discover, as well as the two passes. You will enjoy panoramic views of the Orny, Saleinaz and A Neuve glaciers.
